ok long post. I have a turbo 400 that i use in my rockcrawler. I was out for a run on a 2 day trip and on the second day lost 2 and 3rd gear. Was about time to leave so i just loaded it on the trailer to look at it when i get home.
Well looked at it when i got home and the govener was chewed up so i went to get a new one put it and and tried it and same crap took it and and it was chewed. Had a guy who worked for a trans shop look at it and saw that the back bushing had come out and the shaft had droped down that it what was causing the govener to chew up. He then told me that it comes with a rebuild kit.
Well i found a guy that is suppost to be good with these and talked to him and he said get the kit and he would do it. Well about 2weeks later he calls me not to tell me its done but said that it needs a new case and shaft. ok i can understand that. So i get a new case and shaft witch for a 6'' shaft to a 203 are hard to find take that to him and he says he will get to it this week. Well now i get a nother call that i need to have 3 seals and a nother bushing that didnt come in the rebuild kit and it going to be atleast another week. Its been over a month now and im ass deep in this and keeps getting worse. The kit i got was a tci kit. Told that was the top of the line for what i needed. I just feel like he is feeding me some bull. Shouldnt the kit of had all the seals with it?
Thanks and sorry for the long post had to vent some steam have missed to rides so far.

Wrong tech, wrong kit. I wouldn't let TCI wash my toilet.

damn Mike where were you a month a go and what kit would you recomend and really you think also a bad tech cause i feel like im getting screwed hard. The hobby i have is drive 500+ miles one way to go rockcrawling and dont want this to be a problem. Rather pay lots and fix at home than a little to drive 12 hrs to break and have to load up and come home and do it again.

A tci kit doesn't have all the parts needed to rebuild your th-400 correctly. I build transmisions for a living and typically I buy a transtar master rebuild kit(clutches, steels, gaskets, seals). I also buy a bushing kit,2nd band,4l80e reverse band with the re-inforced lugs so they don't break, new SELECTIVE pump gears, thrust washer kit with metal thrust washers (some have pastic),brass allison style filter, shift kit,new torrington bearings (some 400s have old style thrust bearings with less rollers),selective pump thrust washers to set endplay, new low roller sprag, new center support feed bolt and thats just a basic rebuild. You should also look at a early (1970 and older) or newer 4l80 e direct/3rd reverse drum that accepts the heavy duty 34 element 2nd gear sprag. There are transmission parts wholesalers like transtar, dacco etc in just about every state, there is no excuse for parts to take more than one or 2 days to have in your "builders" hand. The basic parts I listed cost about the same as a "tci kit" which I wouldn't buy unless I needed a kit on a weeked and it was all I could find at a local parts store. Doesn't sound like your "builder" knows what he is really doing.Quite often Ive been able to save cases that spun bushings by dimpling the surface in the hole bushing has spun in and pres in a no-walk lipped output bushing with loctite press fit assist on it. You should also look at a transgo stg 2 shift kit, mainly because it has a super heavy duty 2 nd gear snap ring in it to help prevent the lugs fron blowing out of the case, especially in something hi-performance like you have. Another cheap mod I been doing is using hi-energy 4l80 e borg warner premium clutches instead of the standard clutches,it onlt adds about 15$ to cost of re-build and they have a higher friction co-effiecient,Smitty

yea im sure he doesnt know what he is doing we are going on a nother week now and really cant get my crap from him he has 2 cases torn apart. Now we are waiting on a no walk bushing. He said they wouldnt fit in the other case to worn out is what he said. 2 months and 2 cases and still waiting. This sucks.

Sorry to hear about your problem but there's a reason. Professional trans builders charge a lot of money for there work and there is also a reason. Alot more parts, better parts, quick turnaround, (keeping 15 to 20 thousand dollars worth of inventory on hand) and if you have a problem, a quick and professional get you going again. Had a customer last week told me some friend of his would rebuild his trans for $400 parts included. I just laughed at him and sent him packing.
