: 02lb7 vs 03-04lb7
duramaxphil 11-29-2005, 07:12 PM Im looking at different lb7's to buy. Is there a difference besides the body and interior changes from the 02's to the 03-04's. If you guys were to buy an lb7 which year would you look for. Just wondering which is the better truck? if any difference, just let me know. thanks
HeavyChevyHD 11-29-2005, 09:11 PM yes there is a change from 02 to 03. Inside and out I actually like the 01-02's better. I dont know which year of Lb7 is better than then other but I know they extended the injector warranty to 200,000 miles. Im selling mine if interested I want a 01-03 crew cab myself.
duramaxphil 11-29-2005, 09:25 PM But, in terms of injectors and other engine stuff it is the exact same from 01 to 04?
g.corral 11-29-2005, 09:43 PM Go With The Chev. 02 !!!!!!
DURAtotheMAX 11-29-2005, 09:46 PM I would say go with a 2003 or 2004...I like the interiors better...120mph speedo...enhanced Driver Information Center, more robust data bus system and electrical system, steering wheel controls, auto climate control, power folding mirrors, turn signal mirrors, Bose stereo, rear seat audio controls, Rear seat DVD player just to name a few improvments/options to the 2003's (and up).

duramaxphil 11-29-2005, 10:12 PM Go With The Chev. 02 !!!!!!
Why do you say the 02, what makes it better?
phazar 11-29-2005, 10:40 PM I would buy an 01-04 with lb7 engine because of injector warranty, lly has had injector issues with no extension on the warranty also lb7 have no overheating issues.
GMC-2002-Dmax 11-29-2005, 10:42 PM Why do you say the 02, what makes it better?
2001's had some issues with head gaskets and the ECM is stand alone different.
2002's are IMHO the year to get especially if you are looking for a CHEVY and not a GMC.......
GMC2500HD 11-29-2005, 11:05 PM The Chevy front end on the 02 is better IMO but if you want a GMC then it will not matter, they all look the same. I would take what Tony said about the head gasket and ECM into play.. Good luck.. Also look at the miles and if the truck was used to tow or etc...
duramaxphil 11-30-2005, 08:47 AM anyone else have any imput???
Fred G 11-30-2005, 09:01 AM 03's supposedly have less injector issues, even though the design is the same, possibly because this was the third year that Bosch was making them and the got the bugs worked out of the manufacturing process.
I have an 03, CC, LB7 and the drivetrain has been very dependable. Coming up on 70K miles. I run the Banks 6-gun and tow quite a bit and have no overheating or other problems. Very satisfied with mine.
gmperfomance03 11-30-2005, 09:46 AM Go with the '02 Chevy for reasons described in previous posts
dls64chev 11-30-2005, 10:15 AM It just seems to me that they took away from some areas and added to others. Such as the fuel gauges on the 03 and up, the low fuel light is mearly useless(not as much cushion as the older trucks). And the 12v outlets I have 4 or 5 in my 01 where the new trucks only have 2 or 3. The panelling on the door panel inserts went from cloth to plastic. Just little stuff that they changed that seemed to take away from the new trucks a little. I,ve had an 03 truck and that's just a few differences I've found. But the radios and the updated glow plug relays and ecm is nice on the new trucks.
Another design change on the 03 and newer trucks is the fuel filter placement, or rather the placement of the a/c lines. This causes you to have to remove the passenger side battery to replace the fuel filter. Not a big deal, but still a hassle. Bottom line both are awesome trucks and you'll have great luck with both. Good luck!!!!!!
crewzindmax 11-30-2005, 02:37 PM arent the '01's subject to overboosting as well?
fast03 11-30-2005, 02:44 PM my 03' kicks ass. no major issues some injector trouble but that is covered under the extended policy now, and you do not have to remove the battery for the fuel filter change just reach up uder the fender liner. all my friends with lly trucks wish they would have gotten lb7 trucks when they had the chance.
blacksmoke 11-30-2005, 03:02 PM the 01 has no cat,not sure on the 02,but 03 and up all have one.
DURAtotheMAX 11-30-2005, 03:06 PM 2001-2004 LB7's ONLY have cats if the truck is a California-emmissions model. All LLY's have cats tho.
blacksmoke 11-30-2005, 03:16 PM I guess my friends 01 is from out of state,it didnt have one the day he got it.
dls64chev 11-30-2005, 03:54 PM my 03' kicks ass. no major issues some injector trouble but that is covered under the extended policy now, and you do not have to remove the battery for the fuel filter change just reach up uder the fender liner. all my friends with lly trucks wish they would have gotten lb7 trucks when they had the chance.
I was just saying its easier to just reach under the hood on my 01 rather than either removing the battery or reaching under the dirty fender well filling your fuel filter with dirt and ruining the $5000 fuel system. However I will agree, that I would rather have an lb7 than the lly, except I would like to have the turbo sound of the lly at Idle(they sound good).
JDTRIP 11-30-2005, 04:07 PM 04LB7,never have had to remove the battery or fender liner to change the fuel filter. get the 02,03,04. all are great trucks.
dls64chev 11-30-2005, 04:56 PM Well, I know my buddies 04 truck has the lines running over top of the filter housing in between the battery and the filter housing it self. I looked at it breifly and it didnt look that easy to get to. Maybe it is possible but I did not see a way to do it. His a/c lines are routed completely different than my 01 making it quit difficult to get at.
lovette 11-30-2005, 05:27 PM I have an 03. Didn't come with a cat. It's easy to drop the fender liner to change the fuel filter.
I don't plan on trading it in for a new truck. All the power I need with the Juice.
duramaxphil 11-30-2005, 06:57 PM keep them coming!!!! thanks, guys
Lennox69 11-30-2005, 07:50 PM i have the 2004 and it takes me fifteen minutes to change my fuel filter...easy to get to. and for the year 02,03,04 just buy what your gut tells you!!!!!!!!!!none of us guys here will be driving your truck!!!!!!!buy what you want not what we want!!!!
Roegs 11-30-2005, 08:06 PM The '03 filter is a piece of cake to change. All it needs is a very slight (and I mean slight) bend of the AC line as Eric notes in his procedures. Filter comes right out the top without removing anything.
Claven 12-01-2005, 11:36 AM I prefer 03 for the interior changes, much nicer I think, as for the engine, its the same.
duramaximizer 12-01-2005, 12:00 PM get what you want, but i like my dad's 02. the 03 interior is awesome with the 120mph speedo but that is about all that i care. LB7's rock.
Jorday 12-01-2005, 12:32 PM I take the battery out of mine to change the fuel filter. It takes about 30 seconds to do, so its not really that big of a deal and then there is more room to work. I'd rather not bend the A/C line out of the way, and battery removal way easier than taking the finder liner off, IMO. Those little plastic clips are a pain to deal with. I also like the interior of the newer trucks much better than the old ones.
danb0720 12-01-2005, 02:14 PM I can reach under and remove the fuel filter on my '03... without going through the filter.... guess mine came out of the factory a little different.
rockbit 12-01-2005, 03:17 PM We figured out on an 01 fuel filter: Get one of those thin straps they hold down motorcycles with. Wrap it around the filter a couple times (the right way) and pull on the end... Zip, the filter comes right off. Fuel filter time: 2 min on the side of the road. (Don't forget to fill up the new one.
dls64chev 12-01-2005, 03:39 PM Rockbit, If I were you I would not fill the filter first because you will then be putting unfiltered fuel into the engine and bypassing filtering. Install it dry and use the primer to fill the filter. Not a big deal, just something I never do.
Mike Mac 12-01-2005, 10:58 PM Rockbit, I hold my thumb over the center hole, and then prefill the filter through the outer holes. Saves alot of pumps on the primer pump.
TeamGE 01-22-2006, 03:58 PM I have a '01, CA truck, and it has no Cat, and it has never had a cat, and I know that '02's do not have one either. 03 was the first year for cat's.
dmaxfan 01-22-2006, 05:22 PM I have the 04 and love it. the only problems that I have had is my tach and steering clunk at about 70,000 miles.
ShumDit 01-22-2006, 05:31 PM I have a '01, CA truck, and it has no Cat, and it has never had a cat, and I know that '02's do not have one either. 03 was the first year for cat's.
The 02s w/CA emission surely do come w/CAT ~ it was the first yr of dmax's to do so. I don't think its a big issue as these new CATs seem to be unrestrictive compared to the old gasser CATs we've come to dislike.

Maybe your's has one because of a production date close to '03, but I know of a CA certified '02 truck, (factory stickers on the truck) that has no cat. I'm sure that production date has something to do with it.
OneBlackZ28 01-23-2006, 05:15 AM Have got a 04 LB7 with not cat
superdutyf350 01-23-2006, 05:55 AM buy an 2004 its the way to go
