Check out this tire calculator. According to it, the two sizes are the same width with the 16's a little taller.

Might depend on what kind of tires you have.
& after typing this & reading your sig, did you have 9" rims with the 16s?

285/75/16...285 is width of tires (in mm)...75 is the aspect ratio of the side wall (so take .75 multipy by 285, that will give you the side wall in mm, now multiply by 2 for 2 sidewalls)...16 is the rim size. Add the two up (2.54cm=1in) and you have tire size so the
285/75/16 is a 32.8 inch tire.
285/70/17 is a 32.7 inch tire

i noticed the same thing too! i think i have figured out why. my 285's on the stock rims only rubbed a little, took care of that. i have the 285's on hummer rims and they rubbed in more placed harder. even though they are close to the same size per rim on paper, but the rim width is like about 2" different. the stock 16" rim isnt wide enough for a 285 were as the h2 rim is on the larger side for width. the ones on the hummer rims seem much wider(thats were the extra rubbing comes from) than stocker rims, but thats the width the tire calls for

If u notice the rims have the same backspace so the extra width goes outboard.
When u turn the wheel swings in a larger arc so actually the tires are setting out more.
Stretch a tape across the rear wheels and switch to the 16" ones and see the real difference.
