: I can finally say... "my garage is done"!
tbyrne 11-27-2005, 10:13 PM http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/Garage/garage.jpg
It's been a long road getting the house and garage finished. Not really sure which one I am happier about but I do spend more time in The Garage (http://www.tbyrnemotorsports.com/Garage/garage.html)
The truck sleeps in here once in awhile too :)
Enjoy!
Very nice!
And two cars deep with not one lift, but two! H.S.
I had to showed my wife. It's official, that's this summers project.
Drywall1 11-27-2005, 11:17 PM Very nice I'd be afraid to make a mess though. Wish my shop was that clean.
tbyrne 11-28-2005, 12:12 AM It's going to be tough to get it dirty at first. Kind of like the first scratch of door ding. I have to change the oil and filter in my Sierra soon. I'll probably bring the truck to work and do it there instead :)
GMC2500HD 11-28-2005, 12:15 AM That is pretty cool. Congratulations...
Trippin 11-28-2005, 01:16 AM Very nice! Thanks for sharing. :D
Duratys 11-28-2005, 01:54 AM Is the red "I" beam structural or is it for a set of dollys? What i would do for that garage.....Looks sweet!!!
Slick 11-28-2005, 12:01 PM Hope you don't mind me asking. :o: But...How much money invested for the whole garage?
Very Sweet!!! Congrats.:ro)
tbyrne 11-28-2005, 12:55 PM The two I beams are to hold the 2nd floor up. I use that area for storage. Alot of stock parts get "thrown" up there. It's scary... very scary up there! I need to clean it out someday.
How much into the whole garage? Damn, I don't want to think about that! It was only a 2 car garage with a storage room in the back when I bought the house that used to be there (use was a Ranch style that I had leveled last Nov and built the oversized Colonial).
Let's see... bring the garage out for another 2 cars, making the 2 rooms in back, floor, walls, lifts, TVs, stairs and everything else probably ran me about... ouch! Didn't think it was this high. I'm figuring at least $70k.
Max Power 11-28-2005, 02:36 PM Looks very nice. Great work.
DURAtotheMAX 11-28-2005, 06:47 PM wow tbyrne...I bet every guy alive is jealous of you!! Awesome garage!

btw have you tried those new SSBC brakes on your Sierra yet? Im curious what the performance is like because I have not heard of anyone installing them yet..
STANSUSKI 11-28-2005, 07:52 PM What type of coating on the floor?
Thanks,Stan
yamahagrizzly 11-28-2005, 11:06 PM all that garage and weres all the tools? i didnt so one pic showing off the tools.
tbyrne 11-28-2005, 11:32 PM I was going to run the SSBC brakes but they said that package isn't available for my truck yet. It was supposed to have been ready to stop shipping around this time last year. I might go with the Wilwood package instead. That will require a minimum of 20" wheels so there won't be any going to stock wheels in the winter.
The floor was coated with a 4 part Rustolum epoxy. Hope Depot has a contract with them. The whole thing was done in a day and a half.
Tools are in the red Craftman chest. I don't have alot of them at the house. Even through there are two lifts at home, I take care of my major mods at work. Sometimes I'll bring home some things that I need if I'm taking care of my stuff at the house. Have all of the basics covered there.
Slick 11-29-2005, 08:38 AM 70K. I'm shocked it wasn't more. AWESOME garage.:ro)
ddbackhoe 11-29-2005, 09:38 AM Could you tell me some more about the heating package(s) that you used?
tysmith 11-29-2005, 09:45 PM I don't care where you are, radiant in the slab is the way to go. Nothing like it! Especially nice in winter - warm to work on, and slush/snow/rain evaporate right off. Well worth the money.
tbyrne 11-29-2005, 11:16 PM 70K. I'm shocked it wasn't more. AWESOME garage.:ro)
Actually, I forgot a few things. Make that closer to $95k.
Radiant heat works great! I have that in my breezeway and keep it set to 75. I would have went that route if I poured the whole floor fresh. The hot water heater is a Modine. It's plumbed directly from the boiler in the house. That thing throws off alot of heat! The other one runs off of propane. It also works very well. I have two 100lb tanks outside to feed it. I used that for the last 2 winters and just had the Modine put in when the house was built. Either one can keep the whole garage at 70-75.
tysmith 11-29-2005, 11:30 PM Modine's are nice units, really simple too. Considering you don't work out of your garage, not a huge loss to not have radiant. We have done secondary pours, but never in a garage. 6-8" is a lot to lose... New construction, no brainer, though...
ddbackhoe 11-30-2005, 08:20 AM I don't care where you are, radiant in the slab is the way to go. Nothing like it! Especially nice in winter - warm to work on, and slush/snow/rain evaporate right off. Well worth the money.
Agreed, for new construction or if the construction schedule doesn't get whacked out. My concrete crew showed and poured a week early. Coincidentally, the same day the PEX tubing and manifolds were delivered.
So now, I'm looking at my other options. Was leaning towards LP radiant tubes until I spotted his hot water setup. Hot water heat is not real popular in my area.
Denboy 12-05-2005, 11:42 PM Just had a Martin garage door instaled.Asked for a IDRIVE motor, the installer said will not install them, because to many are returned.
Den.
06Turbo 12-07-2005, 03:39 PM It's going to be tough to get it dirty at first. Kind of like the first scratch of door ding. I have to change the oil and filter in my Sierra soon. I'll probably bring the truck to work and do it there instead :)
Or, I could jus come over and change my oil and break it all n for ya ):h .
Damn nice garage for sure.
tbyrne 12-08-2005, 10:50 AM Thank you!
I had to pull the 22s off my truck on Monday night so I took care of the oil/filter while it was on the lift. I didn't get a drop on the floor :)
ochster 12-12-2005, 03:20 AM I have radiant heat in the slab as well and will forever more. You can put Pex over existing slab easily. I have seen it lots and it only adds about 2" to your floor height.
Howling 12-12-2005, 07:25 PM That is a very nice set up you got there.
I found one that I plan to duplicate.

tbyrne 01-02-2006, 12:49 AM I'm usually not one to say "what does that guy do for a living" but I have to wonder. The first pic shows a Vette (Chevette :) ) and a beat up old BMW. It went from those to cars that are $200k - $300k+ each.

You would need a 5500 to haul the money needed to build that one.;)

Radiant heated floors are nice HOWEVER in garages if you do not mechanically ventilate the humid air from the space you end up with very high mumidity that leads to mold and mildew. I have seen them many times...they get ugly real quick.
drdiesel 01-02-2006, 02:00 PM That's one he!! of a stable you've got there. Very sweet.
wyattroa 01-03-2006, 02:18 AM A shop like that would be way to nice for me, I would be worried about making a mess in there........can you imagine that beautiful shop and a big old oil stain on the floor.........

yeah but if you have a shop like that, you also prob have cheap labor sitting right outside the door to come in and clean up anything and everything that touches that floor!
robert:exactly:
tbyrne 01-03-2006, 02:51 AM I've changed the oil in a few different vehicles (including the Duramax) and have also done some other work in there. Pretty much still as clean as when I took the pics. I spend alot of time in the TV and computer rooms that are in back so I usually walk through in white socks. I also detail and work on some things like that too. I make sure I pick up after myself :) My wife wants a maid for the house through...
Max Payne 01-03-2006, 11:17 AM Very nice! Where is the stripper pole?
tbyrne 01-03-2006, 08:32 PM http://dieselplace.com/forum/avatars/avatar960_4.gif
Now that is the way to advertise this site!!!!!!!!!! :) :) Thank God for boobies! :)
Anyway... :) I've throught about the stripper pole. My wife is good with most things. Doesn't care what I buy, doesn't care much with what I do but I think she would question the pole. I think she knows that I don't need any other support for the roof.
My buddy works as a referee at a local strip club. They have a ring down stairs so the girls can do shaving cream and oil wrestling with customers. I usually don't visit friends at work but in his case I make an exception. I keep telling him that I need to borrow a pole and some girls to use it.
farmer0_1 01-26-2006, 03:11 AM you guys have some nice places I would not mind moving in. be nicer and warmer than the old farm house. dad built a 24x60 with 24x36 of it shop, slider door 11ft tall and 12ft wide and one walk thru door. built it in 1978 just plain tin. used to have some keggers in there that really blew the roof off. those were the days. as you can imagine it is full to capacity with stuff to valuable to throw out, if you can get within 3ft of the walls any more you are doing good. heat it with home made used oil burner. thinking of radiant floor heat and used oil boiler but that would require moving all those things out and pouring a lift of concrete and moving all that stuff someplace.
tbyrne 01-26-2006, 11:30 AM I thought the same thing about moving stuff when you mentioned the radiant heat. Good time to clean out :) I have my "pile" of parts on the 2nd floor of the garage. I guess you can say that there is good stuff up there but I wouldn't get much to sell that stuff used. Maybe in 25 years when people are looking for stock inductions and exhausts to restore a vehicle.
flduramax 02-23-2006, 10:39 AM That looks great. I wish mine had that much room.
Oil Burnr 03-15-2006, 06:01 PM Sweet setup. Only thing missing is a place to sleep...
Rcher 03-15-2006, 06:33 PM I was a commercial journeyman union carpenter for almost 20 years and am now a commercial contstruction manager. I've seen alot of similar structures but this one is a beauty! This is a very nice shop and well configured for your needs. You will find many uses for an environment like this and its something for you to be proud of. Congratulations on a job well planned and done. Enjoy.
tbyrne 03-16-2006, 10:58 AM Oil Burnr: The couch in the computer room opens into a bed so I have that covered too :) I slept in there quite a bit last summer when the house was being build. I didn't want to drive up there early to meet contractors in the morning.
Rcher: Thank you very much! I stood back and smiled when it was finished. The atmosphere in there is very relaxing so it makes it more enjoyable to work on things or just do some detailing. It's come a along way over the years.
