I'll bet I have seen those pictures a dozen times and they still fascinate me. Don't you wonder what the tools they use to make those things look like?

how do they start it?

i wonder how many of those japanese workers get sucked into it's intake each year.

they have to run forced-induction blowers (like externally driven superchargers) otherwise it would be impossible for a 2-stroke diesel engine to start, just by nature of it. If you look at the one pciture that shows the end of the engine with the BIGGG gear on it, look to the left and you'll see a BIG electric motor. Im guessing thats the electric starter...

pffffffffff..Only 7,780 hp per cylinder...weak sauce

yeah Banks is working on something that will crank out that much horsepower on a Dmax. Dont ask for a dyno plot tho. They'll get scared off.

btw Turbo-Max is your Dixie Chopper really turbocharged?? Thats awesome!! What engine is it? Is it the little in-line 3 cylinder Briggs/Daihatsu diesel or something else? Customer at the tractor dealer i work at just bought a new Simplicity Legacy with the Briggs&Stratton diesel...awesome little engine!!

I would have thought the appropriate spot would be "anything else diesel";)

cool thing is if you look at the picture that shows the crank and fly wheel look at the white section of the block, there are ladders going down into each crank valley.

Those pictures are basically a legend at work. 5.6 million lb/ft of torque at 102 rpm that's just plain rediculous.

What do you suppose the turbocharger looks like on that thing? Wonder what it sounds like or how much boost it makes. Probley take ten minutes for it to spool up too.

Ever seen an F-16, that's the turbo for it:eek: .

I would hate to be ANYWHERE within a 10 mile radius of that thing when it chucks a rod...

hhmmmm...wonder how much NO2 that thing would drink?

I believe they will use compressed air to start the engine.
On the old diesel submarines we ran two stroke opposing piston Fairbanks Morse diesels. We use compressed air to get them going. FWIW

big... most engines that size have many chargers on them that would probably have 3 turbochargers. the turbos used on those are also radial entry most of the time, so the exhaust enters the end, and exits the side [and the compressor does the same, end enters, side exits]

http://www.ship-technology.com/contractor_images/man/image04.jpg

here is a link to some more pictures of the large radial turbochargers like above picture (http://www.manbw.com/category_000281.html)

oh, and that air cleaner assembly on the inlet of that charger is about 6' diameter...
