: Which years Cummins are mechanically injected??

I have a '69 C-30 car hauler, that I would like to repower with a 12V Cummins and a 5 speed tranny. I would prefer the mech pump for ease of installation. I'm not looking for a race engine, just a good reliable, long lasting, hard pulling engine. My truck is fairly heavy, 8240# unloaded with a SBC, and I often haul one car on the back and another on a trailor. I would think at times the Gross weight would be between 16,000 - 18,000# depending on the size cars I pull. I have just recently repowered a '67 C-30 dually with a turbo'ed 6.2L, and it runs great, but I know it would not have power I want with the car hauler. I have a 383 SBC in it now rated at around 300HP/400TQ that pulls pretty decent, but it the 4 speed granny trans so it has no OD, and it guzzles the gas BIG TIME!

Might wanna let the dodge guys tell ya just to make sure but I believe they were mechanically injected until 98.5, I aint sayin this cauz its a dodge but a stock 12v aint nothin special maybe a bit stronger than a stock 6.5 but not a lot, but with the mechanical pump and maybe a torque plate you can change that pretty quick.

89-93 were older body style rotary pumps that were mechanical then in 94-98.4 they had the p7100 inline pump im pretty sure 96-98.4 the inline pump and the 5 speed tranny had the highest horse becuase they had a bigger cam in the injection pump........dont now for sure just a guess had a few beers today

if you are looking for a mechanical injected dodge get a 96-early98 for sure they are the best running and i am a die hard chevy fan but they are waaaaaayyyyyy more durable then any 6.5 and ive had a 6.5 dodge can easily run better with no money spent.... take fuel plate out.... silencer ring.... advance timing..... gut the anoriod.... tighten up the governor springs... then you can blow alittle smoke and have great throttle response.for a dodge.. and it will be decently quick... better get some gauges and clutch before those upgrades though

Any 94-98.4 engine will have a p-pump and the NV4500 (5 speed)transmission.
89-93 are VE pump with Getrag transmission
89-90 non charge air cooled.
91-93 charge air cooling
edit
School buses and Ford trucks are more sources for p-pump Cummins.

Common problems
Killer Dowel Pin or KDP. A front cover locating pin that may work out of the block and drop into the timing gears.
5th gear nut. NV4500 problem especially for the engine luggers (low rpm chug).

BTW, never remove the fuel plate from a p-pump. You can shear a rack travel limit pin and ruin the pump.

yeah the rack can stick to full fuel but we have taken about 20 or so out of many p-pump trucks and never have had one stick to full fuel yet

Many people do this to add a different plate profile or grind their own 0 plate.

89-98.4 were all mechanical. I wouldnt pull a fuel plate completley out either. It will give you more power, but when you can just grind the stock plate flat(0) into a #10, and have peace of mind, and the same power, then why not?;) A stock 12 valve isnt all that quick, but will pull quite a bit better than a 6.5. Now put even just a fuel plate in one, and they run pretty darn good.:D

That's what I'm looking for. The 383 pulls good, but it is 4.11 gears, and 1:1 final drive. I know a Cummins with OD would make it much more Highway friendly, and I know a 6.5TD would be underpowered with the weight. The truck in question is pictured below. I use this truck almost everyday, and it gets worked (more like abused!;) ) We pull nicer cars (cars that roll) with a newer F-350 P/S Rollback. We pull junk cars with no rims, and sometimes no axles with the old C-30. The deck is 1/4" flat plate, which is why it's pretty heavy. You can see metal shavings roll off the deck by spindles, etc. on heavy cars and trucks digging in sometimes. We would have destroyed the aluminum Jerr-Dan Rollback body by now. The rear bumper makes a nice battering ram to move stuff around also. A Cummins would sound sweet in the old beast!

Can you tell me how to grind the stock plate? Or do you have a link? Any free mods you may have or know of, let me know. Thanks.
