: Intermediate Steering Shaft clunk
r04dmax 11-23-2005, 04:09 PM I did a search on this topic and noticed it was in the DIY section but I'm curious to know if anyone has experience this with there trucks recently because I have an 04.5 GMC CC SB LLY w/Alli and I've noticed that exact feeling on my truck in the last few months :ro) . I currently have 28,000 km's on my truck by I noticed it around 26,000 km. Is this GM bulletin # 00-02-30-003C still in effect for the 04.5's ?
michael nelson 11-23-2005, 04:16 PM I just had mine replaced-
NorCal 2500HD 11-23-2005, 04:16 PM I had mine replaced and the noise is coming back. I think " Mike L " has a replacement that will fix this problem for good....somehwere in the range of $200..might want to look into that
ob_1jr 11-23-2005, 04:18 PM I believe so, they are supposed to be troubleshooting it like that. On mine, they just changed an upper ball joint, idler and pitman arms. Before they changed the intermediate shaft and it only fixed it for a couple thousand miles. It hasn't really done it since. I know there was a bulletin for the 05s. All you can do is take it to the dealer.
r04dmax 11-23-2005, 04:20 PM Thanks for the quick replies guys. I'll do that and see what the dealer says.
Grenlins 11-23-2005, 04:34 PM had mine replaced twice by the dealer. it's covered under warrenty, let them take care of it.
02B12S 11-23-2005, 06:43 PM Just replaced mine 35Kmi second week of Nov... Took it in for an oil change, told them about the noise. In and out in 45 min, oil change and new I-shaft..
jmg343 11-23-2005, 06:49 PM have had mine done 2x. 2nd time i had to pay the 100 dollar deductible plus I got charged 75 dollars for the time it took them to "make sure that was the problem" even though i told them exactly what the problem was and I was right. If I go see MikeL. for a tranny sometime soon maybe Ill have him do my ISS too.
towdog333 11-23-2005, 06:55 PM Had 2 replaced at 10k &11k, clunk still there, took the truck to the dealer today and he said it is the steering gearbox. Will repalce it when the new one comes in .
catch007 11-23-2005, 07:09 PM Did my own with the grease kit @14K. I found less than a teaspoon of grease on the wrong side of the splines. I now have 32K and it still feels like the day I drove it off the lot. The 30 Min's. it took me to do it was a piece of cake. I just kept thinking how much the General must have saved on grease, and what its costing him now.
r04dmax 11-24-2005, 08:12 AM I dropped in to see the dealer yesterday afternoon and mentioned it to them about the clunk and they informed me that there isn't even a bulletin out for our year of truck. There must be a defect in the part for some of you to have replaced it 2x now.

I thin it was stated somewhere that it was the splines on the ISS wearing out or somthin to that affect.....
r04dmax 11-25-2005, 09:09 AM Well, I dropped the truck off at the dealer this morning and we'll see what they say but the service rep did acknowledge that they now about this problem and the fix :) .
I'm also having them check on the vibration/ressonnance at the 1200-1400 and 1700 rpm and if they can't diagnose that one, I'll make and install the bracket that some of the members here have to fix it.
This forum is great, I'm learning a lot on what the fixes are for some of these little issues.
Thanks
r04dmax 11-25-2005, 03:44 PM Dealer just called, they replaced the Intermediate Steering Shaft :) . Hopefully they put a good one in. I'll see when I pick it up tonight and try it out for the weekend.
As far as the vibration/resonnance issue, they informed me that there's something vibrating in the Catalic converter so they've order me a new one  .
searchlightt 12-04-2005, 10:08 PM Mine also had the problem I took it in at 35K. They just replaced the part, they also said that it was a up dated part so it " shouldn't " happed again. So far so good.
