Hello, I am new to this forum. I am not to knowledgeable about the Duramax and I have a friend who has a problem. He has an '02 and his bellhousing cracked and so did the backing plate. The other issue is it's leaking coolant from the rear of the engine. Now my question is does the backing plate effect the water jacket. Or do you think the block is cracked behind it? Thanks for the help in advance.

What is it? Allison or ZF? If its a ZF then the backing plate doesn't hurt the water jacket I have already replaced mine, As for if its an allison, I don't really know.

My bad, it's the Allison. Am I correct in thinking that it is the same way with the Allison too?

From what I saw when I had mine off I would assume its the same way as the ZF, but dont quote me on that.

Yeah that would make sense since only the plate would be different, depending on the trans, not the block itself. I guess this is bad news for my friend. Once they get that broken plate off there I think he's gonna find a cracked block. Thanks for your help.

Ha. Funny you should say that my friend has a sticker on his now defunct truck that says that. What caused you to replace the plate on your truck?

I had some inexperienced gm techs put a clutch in and the tried to pull the tranny together with the bolts and the input shaft wasn't lined up and it snapped in 3 places Censored So I had to buy a new one ($523.36) and then I watched them so they couldn't cost me more money.

I seriously doubt that the block is cracked. My truck was hit hard enough to break the engine and transmission apart, so I have changed the rear engine cover. There are some large coolant passages in the rear cover that could be leaking.

Are there any freeze plugs on the back of a Duramax?

PM DmaxalliTech.

IIRC, the rear seal cover has water passages through it, similar to a 3.8. If you did something to the trans severe enough to break both the bellhousing and flexplate, you probably broke the rear cover too. Get it fixed pronto.

Thanks to all that posted and helped me out. Luckily, it was indeed the rear seal cover that cracked.
