In a half hour I'm heading to the garage to do my first Fuel filter change. Is there any tips you guys have that will make the change easier. The Filter is a Wix p/n33810. Thanks

Although I remove the plastic liner for even easier access ... Two piece plastic rivets .... Use cotter pin removal tool or a pick to remove center piece ...

Note: If you put the filter back on hand tight it will be a lot easier to get off next time. Later! Frank

Thanks for the tips guys.

Stupid question. I got the WIF sensor off but I can't get the fuel heater connection apart. Is there a tool I should use? Thanks. Nick in waiting.........

You only need to take the one WIF connector appart..

The heater wire goes directly into the filter head. I assume your talking about the wires to the WIF sensor. Someone else had trouble and I think they said there was a white dot on the connecter. They pinched on the white dot while pulling it apart and presto, it unpluged. You need to sqeeze the latch to release it. Hope this helps.

Disconnect the two electrical connections, they are attatched to the valve cover with a flexible metal support, the top connector is the WIF sensor and the bottom one is the fuel heater.

I'm just going by Eric's instructions. So you thing I'll be ok just taking off the one connection?

Mackin

Yes the bottom one connected to the filter )water sensor)is the only one you need to dissconnect ....

Are you done yet ....

Yeah the heater is connected to the top of the housing not the filter just disconnect the WIF connector and bed the little holder back and then take the unscrew the filter.. Pull it out and you got it..

You know, this internet thing is truly amazing. Here we are almost with a person changing there filter in all but real time, and we can be any distance apart. You know, some may laugh, but there could very well come a day when you could pay someone like Eric by the hour to guide you through an upgrade to a trans or just help you change a fuel filter. You will have a head mounted web cam and a headset with speakers and mic. He will guide you through the job from his office!

Yeah a little bit of her worry was my fault..I ke[pt saying things like "oh no...Crap....Dang....Oh man....Thats never happened before...Was I really supposed to cut those wires...

The more I mumbled the more freaked out she got..it was quite funny...

Well all is done. The biggest delay was not having a filter wrench big enough to go around the filter. Called my dad and he had one. That helped.

YZF1R-This internet thing is awesome!http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Thumbs%20Up.gif I'm gonna have to get a laptop and put it in the garage for when I'm working on my truck. If I need a hand all I gotta do is head to this sitehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Lonewolf867-I primed a good 70 to 80 times before I got fuel out the bleeder screw. I started her up just waiting for her to die. To my surprise she stayed runninghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif My wife doesn't understand why I decide to work on my truck so late. That's the only nagging I gethttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

Once again, thanks for the help guys.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

Did she offer you any alternatives to working on the truck late?

after reading this thread. i went to napa and got myself a new filter. boy they are expensive at $33. i did the filter change today and it was not easy, my truck has 26,000 miles and the original filter would not come off. so i took the fuel lines loose and removed the housing and after putting it in a vise and using a pipe wrench i got it off. after replacing back on the truck, the primer would not pump up, so i broke the hoses again and used a very small funnel and refilled the lines with fuel, thinking that i must have gotten air in them, and that worked. this took me all of 3 hours and got fuel all over me, the truck and the driveway. their has got to be an easier way if i got to keep doing this every 6-10 thou. mile. after finally getting te truck back on the road, i noticed a big improvment in the performance. could the old filter have been slowly plugging and causing an unnoticed drop in performance.

Yes.

Yes

And now that you got the factory filter off the next one should be much easier and faster espically if you dont take the head off and the fuel lines. Might be easier to take the inner fender off for better access. 1 hour job tops, that includes beer and a cigar in the garage. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Wink.gif

well, i don't drink and i stopped smoking 2 months ago, so maybe 30 min. next time. it sure is amazing how much more power i got with just a filter change. does some one sell a filter less than napa for $33? i may try to move this thing and put it under neath the truck for better access.

my biggest tip: fill the filter with fuel before you reinstall the new one. The last time I changed the GM one and my Cat pre-oem I filled 'em both before installing and there was no priming involved.

I bought my last filter at Napa and paid $34 Cdn for it...that's about 26.50 US or so...

I also had difficulty getting the filter off - wheel well access. I used a strap wrench like shown by tanner above. The wrench did put a dent in the side of the old filter. I was very careful in putting the new filter on - hopefully I didn't get it too tight. I think the OFS278 wrench shown by Hound at Matco Tools (http://www.matcotools.com) would work better since it is adjustable. But, it costs quite a bit more.

P.S. Make sure to clean off all the fuel before lighting up that cigar http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif!Edited by: tundracamper

I took Frank Blum's advice and just hand tightened it this time. It hasn't leaked at all and next time I change it it'll be a lot easier.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif
