My friend just bought a TDI just to drive to work and back. He is getting close to the first oil change. The owners manual has said nothing about and oil change as in how much and what type. He read on another forum that it needs to have a certain european standard type oil. Anyone heard anything about that? They say it is required mainly because the injectors fire off of the crank or cam... If that is so, what brand of oil is available to meet these standards and about how much per quart?:help2:

505.01, 506.00, or 507.00.

The first is semi synth, the second the third are fully synth.

Castrol 50501 can be had at the dealer for 6 bucks a quart or something like that. tdiparts.com stocks the other two. They are the cutting edge when it comes to oil. Those europeans know their diesels.

Ide do 50501 for the first change, and then a synth for the second. The synth oils are something like 11/qt, but they are good for long intervals. 20k on europe diesel at least.

Make sure he uses the right stuff and documents it. Dealers look for anything to get out of a warranty issue.

Good luck.
