Searching the forums and I'm looking for advice and "Hey remember to..." when replacing my IP.

It's been many, many years since I've done something this involved with an engine.

I'm hoping it's as simple as:

1) unbolt intake manifold
2) clean intake manifold
3) unbolt old IP
4) bolt in new IP and attach lines
5) put in new intake manifold gasket and bolt down.

I'm sorta nervous because I don't know what else I would encounter.

For the inevitable questions I am attempting this because I have an problem holding steady RPM around 2,000 - 2,500. Very light peddle gives immediate 500RPM. So cruising at say 2,300 RPM is an impossibility. Truck also has a tendency to continually accelerate (although slowly) beyond 2,500 RPM. I get codes 35, 36 and 40 something, don't remember right now. Installed Remote PMD with no change in operation. Most likely will get a rebuilt IP with 1 year warranty.

Redirects to other posts or pictures greatly welcome.

Thanks,
Bill

Do you have a performance chip in it? The reason I ask is I had a hypertech chip with all of the problems you describe, removed chip and went back to the stock one and hasn't happened since(about 10 months and 15,000 miles). I recently had a problem with idle flare and replaced the ECM and put in an updated chip and it is MUCH better now, no more idle flare.

i remember reading somewhere a code 35, 36 means the pump is dead. fuel solenoid driver or something along those lines. there'll be an expert along shortly to verify that though.

The ECM... that's the dohickey behind the glove box right? I've heard mention of that causing basically the same thing I have, but with the code 35, 36, I placed it as PCM / IP.

PCM has been swapped so I'm guessing IP is next.

Thanks,
Bill

"PCM" I think you mean PMD? Like I posted earlier, I had the same exact hing on my 95 Suburban, ended up being the hypertech chip. The only thing was I was only getting a 35. I have an ECM with a chip in it for a 95 Suburban, if your interested PM me. My ECM had an idle problem every once in awhile, but it ran fine going down the road. Might help you out to eliminate the pump. I know many people blame the IP imediately since they are such a failure prone item.

Did all this start after the veggie conversion?

No started before the veggie conversion and has just been getting progressively worse. It's very annoying.

Yes, meant PMD not PCM :o:

I hope that this is not the original pump on the engine. 94 /95 bad years for IP's. Texas Diesel Guy would know better, but I think that there was a recall on those pumps. Don't know for sure, so don't quote me on that.

I don't recall your milage either, but IP's have 11year/120,000 mile warranty, if that will brighten your day.

Mileage is 75,000. As far as I can tell it's the original. I was unaware that they have such a long warranty. I suppose I should read the dealer info on it, but they'll probably void me anyway for the veggie system now.

How long to "ditch" the veggie system? If it was messing up before hand, then I don't think you're being dishonest in removing it to get the warranty. If the veggie system did destroy it, then, that wouldn't be fair to GM's warranty.

I'd spend the afternoon going retroactive if needed to save the money on that IP replacement.

Looking over what the dealer would go thru just to diagnose the IP, I'd have to say it's near the $700 that I'd spend on buying a rebuilt IP myself and installing it. Plus I wouldn't have any of the stress of arguing with them. Hmmmm... tough call.
