Yesterday when I got in my '05 2500HD, I started the engine, let it run for about 30 seconds, released the parking brake, and proceeded to roll down my driveway backwards with no power brakes and no power steering. I never knew how much pedal pressure it took to stop a truck. I was standing on the pedal to get it stopped. The truck has 6,600 miles on it. I cracked the cap to the power steerring pump and oil blew out. The level was right at the top of the filling hole. I replaced the cap and started the truck. Everything seemed o.k. I took the power steering pump cap off again and the fluid level was way down there.

Does anyone know what the problem is. The dealer has it, and I want to make sure when they call me tomorrow that I don't get the old "we couldn't duplicate the problem" line, and have nothing repaired. I seem to remember a thread noting a recall of power steering pumps related to the "groan" issue. Can anyone confirm this.

P.S. - My dealer is top notch, Mazzei GMC in Pittsburg, CA. They gave me a car to drive, at no personal expense, until I get my truck back.

I may be wrong... But I have always gotten a loaner paid for by GM... Not the Dealer... I'm tired but I think thats part of the 36000 mile warranty...

Superdrb:

There's a thread below with several responses listing different problems affecting power steering and brakes with failure issues which sounds similar to yours. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know what the dealer finds.

The dealer replaced the power steering pump. On another subject, due to my complaint about a knock in the steering wheel while turning, they also replaced the intermediate steering shaft. They did it all with a smile on their face and no B.S. attitude.

Mine did that once on my father inlaw when he was using the truck but it has never did it on me. He did the same thing you did; started the truck and it would not steer. I need to take it to the dealer to get everything done.

I expect mine to be dying soon. It is groaning louder every day but I am afraid to take it in, I am sure the dealer will say its because of the oversized tires...

GPJ - My buddy has the same truck, lift, and tire size as you. Both of us had the "groan" with our stock setup before getting larger tires. The dealer where I bought my truck sells new lifted trucks with 325's on them. Try not to let your dealer weasel out of the repair. There is a recall notice for the power steering pump, so it should be no skin off their nose. Good Luck!

Thanks Superdrb, I will see what I can do with my local dealer. Did your buddy get his taken care of and if so did it last?

His hasn't bought the farm yet, so he's just waiting for the inevitable.
