I'm a newbie to this site and diesel trucks. Bought my first in August of this year. 2005 K2500 H/D Crew Cab, no mods YET.

My question is I live in Southeastern New Mexico where the temps have been down in the 20's and highs in the 50's and 60's. I do not drive my truck daily. Will it hurt the engine to leave the block heater hooked for several days at a time?

Thanks in advance,
Jack Bonner

I wouldn't....Mine started just fine the last couple of day at 20 degrees. Way easier than my PowerStroke ever did!

I wouldn't leave it plugged in for a couple of days. I'm in Texas where it doesn't get so cold but I have used mine the last two nights ( in the 30's) and it worked great. I have also not used the block heater and it still started right up. I have been using it b/c my heater is already pretty much warm when I start my truck in the am, I don't have to waut to turn it on.

Do not leave that thing plugged in for that long, or you will have trouble. Not to mention a lot lighter pocket book when you pay your electric bill. That heat element in there is nothing more than a dead short and sucks electricity like mad. Not to mention the fact that it gets very hot. You only really need it in colder weather than that. I wouldn't even be plugging it in for 20 degree weather. When I use mine, I plug it in when it is bitter cold. 10 to 15 dgrees and lower. And, I only plug it in the night before I am going to drive it. It only needs a few hours to warm everything up. So DON'T leave it plugged in. I live near Kansas City, MO and it was in the high teens the other day and mine started fine with no problem:ro)

I plug mine in if its gonna be below 30. I leave it plugged in if the temps are going to remain below 30. If you park it inside, its probably not that big a deal. I have to leave mine outside where it is subject to wind, etc.

I have an oilpan heater on it in conjunction with the engine block heater. 15w40 is thick as honey when its super cold.

Wind has no effect on your truck ex.If the wind is blowing and its 30 degrees and the wind chill is 0 degrees the truck feels 30 degrees, wind chill is only felt on humans an animals.

I have a 04 john deer tractor 100hp 4x4 and it is plugged in all the time when not in use from november to april, never hurts anything and gets instant heat. The truck goes on a timer set for 4 hours before I leave.niceand toasty.
