5000 miles it says change the external spin on transmission filter. Do I just change the filter and run or anything else I need to do?

Just change the filter, you don't have to drain the fluid. Top off when done, 5 min job.

I fill the new filter with ATF then I check it when its warm as per the procedure in the manual. I rarely have to add any.

Don't forget to clean up and swap over the magnet in the filter!

I just changed mine 2 days ago with a little over 6,000 on it. Took quite a bit of shavings off the magnet and I'm not a harsh driver. Like everyone else has said, its quick, easy, and Mike L. said too!!

Thats some cheap insurance and its easy to do. I recommend changing it when you do the oil as you already have the drain bucket there. Also, the trans filter is cheaper then the engine filter so no reason to skimp IMO.

Don't change it. Wait 25K miles then do it. No dirt right?

Change mine every 10K with the oil and fuel filters. When Eric had my tranny on he bench, I remember seeing a breather on the top surrounded by dirt. Tranny heats up, air inside expands and exhales though vent. Tranny cools down, air inside contracts and inhales through the same vent.

Eh, maybe a little lame. Go ahead Phazar, try changing it at 25k and see how much "dirt" and metal you get of that magnet.:badidea: -:t

Every 5K - Ext. Trans. Filter and 8 qts. of ATF from drain plug are changed.

i think completely draining and replacing the atf is more of an every 25K think rather than a 5K thing.......

I got a NAPA filter # 7701 and went to change mine over the weekend and the filter holes for the incoming/ or outgoing (the small holes) oil is different, when I put the magnet on it, it covered the holes. I looked at the OEM I took off and the holes are closer to the edge of the filter and lay on the outside of the magnet. Is the filter the same for the 06' as the 05. NAPA had nothing on file in the computer for the 06s yet.

I would not buy dads truck either, id be afraid to see the transmission and especially the rear diff fluid, what a smell it would be.-:t

IF I am reading Allison charts right they recommend filter change every 50,000/12,000 for general/severe conditions. Change fluid every 50,000/12,000 respectively unless you are running 100% Transynd which by Allisons definition is 2 oil changes using Transynd. In that case you can extend the oil change interval to 100,000/50,000 and the filter to 50,000 in any condition.

Mike... I remember catching in another thread where you were talking about different filters and the one you use is not the one that you would install on a customer's tranny and why....

What was that other filter that you actually use?

I checked their website using your location and here's what it came up with. And yes the filters are the same for the '06. 2 http://www.allisontransmission.com/images/locator/mappoint/allisonbluestar.gif Kron International Trucks, Inc. Dealer ----------25.34 Miles
