I've got the intake removed from my turbo and can feel a noticable amount of slop in the impeller. This is not a forward / backward movement, but an up and down movement. Does anyone know how much free play there should be. I think I'm going to have to take it to the dealer, but you know what a pain that can be.
I've got about 36,000 miles on it and the oil has been changed religiously.

There is a lot of radial play in a brand new factory LLY or LBZ charger. Feels like about .030". Not sure why.

Could it be that the metal of both the housing and the impeller need room for expansion due to the heat?

Dont forget, the oil pressure will take up alot of that slop. You need to check it while the engine is running...):h

I've had a lot of turbos apart, old and new, mostly off cat equipment. And they all have a surprising amount of radial play. I dont worry about it unless it rubs, or doesnt spin smoothly.
