DURAMAXED03 02-14-2004, 08:30 PM Ladies and Gentlemen,
I'm sure this has been asked before, and I'm sure it'll be asked again.....My truck is Juiced and I know that running EGT and Boost gauges are highly recm'd. But I'm fearful this is a warranty killer, or would make my Svc. Rep look my truck over like a hawk to see if I'm running any extra performance goodies (besides my 4" exhaust that is already there). Could any of you out there shed some light on this? Thanks in advance

P.S. also could you tell me if it's preferable to A-pillar gauges or ones that mount elsewhere if it makes a difference in the eyes of the Service tech
tanner 02-14-2004, 09:02 PM I as a tech would not hassle anyone for having gauges on their truck. I mean whats wrong with wanting to know EGTs and boost pressure?

Why not continue to monitor ALL possible parameters ?? Freightliners Macks and others come standard with proper instrumentation .... I think all diesel even medium to light duty should come factory with boost and EGT monitering instrumentation ....
The dealer has never questioned me once .....I'd know what not to say ,and would respond properly if I ever was ....
The Edge Additude well that's anouther story.... I wouldn't want that or a TST controller in plain view during service .... Mine would be velcro'd or in the roof compartment which could be pushed inside with a factory plain front to install for service ....

DURAMAXED03 02-14-2004, 09:53 PM actually i got a whole new fuse block so I have an extra cap so i just unsnap the edge take off the cap w/ the edge and then put the other one on.....in reguards to the gauges I think I'm gonna go ahead and get'em any tips on whose got the tops in quality and looks, also where's the best place to get the best reading for boost? Thanks again for all questions answered....I've soaked up more knowledge on here reading about my truck than I did in high school!!!

Just wanted to reiterate my question on where the best place to attain the most accurate boost level is. And please correct me if I'm wrong, manifold for the Pyrometer...I know these newbie questions get damned annoying but gotta start somewhere! Thanks in advance!

This is a general overview showing the common ways that I mount gauges. I mounted my SPA digital gauge (http://www.kennedydiesel.com/dmax_guage_SPAdg211.htm) in the overhead console. I wanted something different and inconspicuous. My truck has the deluxe overhead console with the block off plate. I offset it to the side to allow the addition of another gauge in the future. The console drops down by removing a single screw at the front. All wires were of adequate length, and tucked easily above the head liner, and run behind the A pillar. I placed the signal box for the pyrometer so that I could access through the side dash fuse panel access door. I have since relocated the menu switch (red button shown) to inside the remote garage door opener panel. This same installation can be done with analog gauges. The gauges can also be mounted on the A pillar with a gauge mounting pod.

The pyrometer thermocouple can be mounted in the passengers side manifold by drilling and tapping to 1/8" or 1/4" N.P.T depending on the type used. While it is best to remove the manifold to do this, many have been drilling and tapping the manifold while on the vehicle by running the engine to blow out the chips as they are made. I pre drill the hole at 3/16”, and follow with a step drill to the appropriate size. The step drill (use dry) has a single, wide relief that lets the chips blow out very well. Be sure to wear eye protection! If one were to remove the manifold, the gaskets are reusable, and you could also install the N.P.T. fitting, and grind away any protrusion to eliminate any obstruction to flow prior to reinstalling. The depth should be adjusted to the middle of the flow path if adjustable.

I prefer, whenever possible to plumb the boost gauge to a solid part of the engine. On the 2002 and 2003 models, the casting that feeds the intake (from the intercooler) and houses the boost sensor and intake heater is long enough to provide a simple installation. I drill and tap to 1/8” NPT. To do this, I remove the intercooler hose and insert a shop vac hose to draw out any chips as they are produced. It is also not a bad idea to change the oil shortly after doing this. The alternative is to cut and tee into the wastegate hose. This is a simpler operation, but does not provide a firm mount.

DinoMax 02-16-2004, 01:37 PM duramaxed03, I teed into the wastegate hose for bosst pressure. Readings are in line w/ what everyone else is seeing, and, in regards to it not being as firm a mount, I have seen no problems to date. If you are concerned w/ tech's "seeing" your gauges, you might want to consider something other than analog in a pillar mount. I have digital gauges mounted in my O/H console. Very easy to hide w/ a factory console plate after unplugging gauge if you wanted to. But, even if you hid the gauge face, chances are they will see the boost & egt tap/mount locations. Personally, I do not think the gauges would hurt you as far as warranty concerns, as long as you don't have any power adders installed when you bring it in.
