: $50k & No Light under the Hood ??
Glamisboy 11-14-2005, 02:17 AM The frik'n sticker was just shy of $50k, tonight to my surprise I discovered gm no longer puts a light underneath the hood ??
Whats that all about ?? It's bad enough they now are installing ferd interior door panels (all plastic, no fabric or carpet, like my '02 did) but no light under the hood is really kinda lame.
dozerboy 11-14-2005, 03:28 AM That's bean counters for ya, no glove box light neither.
Reineke 11-14-2005, 06:04 AM There are lights available for purchase if you are interested in spending the more money for it. I always have a flashlight on board so it has never really been an issue, just a luxury.
CottonWoodBlues 11-14-2005, 08:28 AM I see Eric Merchant has one at his website...

camaroracer 11-14-2005, 08:41 AM GM is gay with some of this stuff...... i agree a f-ing light would be nice for a 50g truck!!
C.A.P 11-14-2005, 08:48 AM what do you expect for $50k ? lights are a big expense !!:joke: I agree it is a PITA to work on your truck in the dark , especially when you need both hands , and cant hold a flash light , you end up chomping down on a flash light like a cigar and damaging your teeth as the metal chips them away
IRA51 11-14-2005, 09:33 AM when they design it so you don't need a lift pump do you think your gonna get a light?

Man Eric...talk about an advertising slogan!!!!:)
BigStu128 11-14-2005, 11:12 AM The rumor I heard was that the Environmental Protection Agency was coming down on GM. The lights they were using had mercury switches, and the EPA was counting that against them on their hazardous release allowance. Rather than pay a penalty or concession when the regulations tightened up, they just pulled them out of the truck permantantly.
All I can say is, buy a maglight, or give Eric and the guys at Merchant a call.

Glamisboy 11-14-2005, 01:34 PM Ok, since I need to now add a light under the hood(as well as mount my streamlight in the cab).
Does anybody have a good solution or idea as to what light to add under the hood ?? I'm thinking i like the whole reel light idea, like the ones gm used to put under the hood.
SmoknDmax 11-14-2005, 01:41 PM You aren't paying attention....check out Merchant Automotive.

He has both the reel light and the original underhood light. You could get either light (or both if your really ambitious).

I installed this GM light under the hood. Its pretty cool because it is retractable on a 25' cord that winds up with a built in reel. I think these came on late 90's GM trucks. I mounted it on the back side of my ECM cover in the engine compartment, mainly because it was easy to wire from there. This light didn't come with the plug, but it was easy to make one. It will reach all the way to the rear wheel wheels. I'm thinking about getting another one and installing it in the bed to cover the back of the truck. Its just a cheesy incandescent bulb, but it puts out enough light to work by. I already used it to install my EGR blocker plate at night. The back side of it is magnetic so it will stick to the truck. The part number was 15990293. Cost about $40 with shipping.

hoppyinak 11-14-2005, 02:25 PM I have that little light under my hood and I absolutely hate it. Everytime I shut my hood the damn bulb inside explodes. It was nice to have when it actually worked but I just disconnected it and went with the reel style light which is awesome!!!!
ssduramax 11-14-2005, 06:04 PM I got my reel light from Eric as well. i mounted it to the underside of the hood. Look in the do it yourself threads for a good write up on how to do it. works great. I actually used it last night while hooking up my EGT guage.
tentspike 11-15-2005, 10:31 PM You know I got over that fact till you just brought it up again! Mine to was just shy of 50 and Gm removed numerous features my 03 had that my 06 doesn't. Like I said I'm over that now and still love my truck. It's a diesel.
My brother just bought an 05 Ram and I found out he has a light under his hood while checking out the Engine. I was surprised when he told me it was part of a pkg he ordered. There all cutting back on the old standards options if you ask me.
Towsaboat 12-03-2005, 12:47 PM I'm about to head to a junk yard (ooopps sorry.... automobile recycling facility) to pick up some spare relays because of the Maxpower headlight mod. While there I want to pick up a reel light like on my 91 and an underhood light. Any ideas what year trucks I need to look for to get these parts?
dozerboy 12-03-2005, 09:23 PM Our 89 had one
tophog 12-03-2005, 09:48 PM But I heard GM is making a fortune on those little lights that strap to your forehead with an elastic band :)
