: Elevated idle automatic?

Hey all,

Is the elevated idle for cold weather operation automatic, or does it have to be initiated through the steering wheel controls with the DIC. Thanks Davey:secret:

The elevated idle is a feature you can enable thru the DIC... it kicks in automatically when the temp drops below freezing and the engine temp is below a built-in threshold. Once the engine warms up the idle returns to normal.

There is a mod you can do that will let you manually elevate the idle using the cruise control button. See the coyotekid for a pin if you're interested in doing it. He may still have some.

The elevated idle is something you can turn on or off in your DIC. However, if you turn it on, it will only ramp up your rpm's if the ambient temp is below 39 degrees F. That is what I read in the owners manual.

From the Duramax Diesel supplemental manual..."it has a cold temperature high idle and exhaust restrictor feature which elevates the engines idle speed from 680 to 1200 rpms, and restricts the exhaust gas flow, when outside temperatures are below 32*F and the engine coolant temperature is below 150*F."

How does it restrict exhaust gas flow? Is this done through the vane postioning in the turbo?

Yep, the auto high-idle changes the vane position. The manual high-idle that Max Power devised does not, but it's still a great mod!

I can provide part #'s, but I no longer sell the pins.

How do you do it manually with the cruise control settings? I fired mine up last week and my outside temp was reading 33 and it not not engage. I didnt expect it too assuming it only works below 32 degrees.

It does not rely on OAT (outside air temp) for engaging the high idle. It relies in IAT (intake air temp). Most likely the intake temp under the hood is a little higher than the OAT, especially if the truck has only been shut off for a couple hours.

Here are Max's most excellent instructions:

The part # for the pin is: 15356826-L

The "-L" is optional to the best of my knowledge.

Eric @ www.gmdieseltech.com (http://www.gmdieseltech.com) should have them in stock.

Mine kicked on for the first time since earlier this year this morning. Temp in mirror said 35. Does the wind chill have anything to do with this?

I just found Kennedy's explanation of the parameters for the LLY's elevated idle:

http://www.kennedydiesel.com/docs/Elevated_Idle_Description_LLY_Duramax.htm

Also from what I've been reading, it sounds like the Allison transmission also plays a part by putting a load on the engine while the idle is elevated... or is that just on the '06 w/ new 6spd Allison 1000?

True, and while testing my ghetto CAI I discovered that if the MAF is left unplugged, IAT will register well below zero and engage the elevated idle if set to do so via the DIC.

If you want to see how it works...
