Anyone use a wind deflector mounted on the roof of their truck when towing a fifth wheel? If so did it help with wind resistance and mileage.
PS - I am glad this site is here, it's a great source of information.

A buddy of mine puts a aluminum boat upside on a rack when towing his trailer. not a 5er, but still got 50 miles per tank improvment.. ~92 ford 460..

I don't have personal experience with one, but from everything I've read at http://rv.net forum, owners state that the bug kill line gets raised a little on the front of the trailer, but no difference in mileage. Many responses were actually trying to sell theirs to the person inquiring.

I assume you are talking about the wings that some people use.
I don't know how much it would affect our trucks, but I did run into a gasser that was pulling an older TT. He said it would add about 2-3 mpg to his mileage.
I think it depends on how aerodynamic the trailer is that you're towing and how fast you are going to pull.

I did some research a while back when I was thinking of getting a wing for my brothers tow vehicle. Forget where I found it, but I stumbled into a trailer towing forum that had a lot of members who had tried the towing wings. Basic concensus from them is that they looked cool but didn't do squat for increasing MPG's. Those that did have any improvement could not be sure if the wing helped or because they were being a little more careful on the throttle. The wing certainly did not hurt milage, unless they were running the truck without the trailer, then their normal empty MPG's would go down due to the drag of the wing.
About the only style that seemed to have any actual improvement was the molded to fit versions that closed to within a few inches of the front of the trailer.

I even thought that the shell on my truck would help. It didn't.
From all I read, no MPG help at all. BUT there was many reports that they did help in side-wind senerios.
