Hello all, I have a 2001 2500HD with the 8.1 gas motor that has almost 130,000 miles on it and was wondering if I should get the timing chain or belt changed? This truck is in very good condition with most of the miles being highway and I'd hate to lose the motor because of something that could have been prevented. Any idea of how involved the procedure is to change it? Thank you.

No timing belt involved...just a chain...I'm not sure how long the service life is, but I sure wouldn't worry about it
If it were to break is there a chance of other engine damage, valvetrain ect, that could be caused? That is my only concern, I'd rather spend a little money now than a lot later.:)

Well, as far as I know, the 8.1 is not an interference engine..(in other words, if the chain breaks, the valves won't hit the pistons)
As long as that's the case, the only thing that will happen is you'll come to a sudden stop...no damage involved other than the tow bill..
I can't say I've ever heard of someone breaking a timing chain on an 8.1 yet.
