: Suncoast delivers! New torque convertor works most excellent.
McRat 11-11-2005, 11:23 PM Hats off to Joe at Suncoast and Mike L of Inglewood Transmissions.
As many of you know, I have run 2 different convertors in Casper to compare, a TTS, and a Suncoast Velocity. I said the Suncoast needed to be tighter up top, and looser down low.
Guess what. Joe sent a different convertor over based on my feedback, and Mike slapped 'er in. Felt good on the street, but "feels good" don't cut it.
We brought it to the track tonight (HRP) to check it out. It passed with flying colors. Easy to build boost, but starts to couple aggressively at 2500. We will have to test it again when we get back our home track, but the truck certainly goes quicker after the convertor swap, the question is just how much.
I'll try to "quantify" what the track is telling when I get home, but for now, this is certainly a very good convertor.
Mike L. 11-11-2005, 11:48 PM So far this converter from Suncoast is the fastest coupling converter I have driven. In Casper it flat out kicks a$$. Next test will be in an LB7 with some power. I expect the same results.

I'm thinking you need a big heavy truck with some power. :D
DURAtotheMAX 11-12-2005, 01:35 AM McRat I literally *JUST* ordered my Suncoast IV kit (2 days ago)... Would I have gotten the new torque converter? Im pretty sure I went with the "Velocity" TC. Whichever one Eric recommended... Or is this new TC a custom/still in development thing? I hate this. I always save my money and buy the best, rather than buying cheap earlier, and then something better comes out a day later. (or in this case, 2 days later:rolleyes: )

BMDMAX 11-12-2005, 10:06 AM I have said that the Velocity delivers from day one! Excellent converter. :exactly:
Mike L. 11-12-2005, 10:58 AM This converter is one off to date. Nobody else has this one.
DURAtotheMAX 11-12-2005, 11:05 AM alright good thanks Mike...that makes me feel better that I dont have a "dinosaur" now for a TC.

Hired Gun 11-14-2005, 12:19 PM I hate secrets. Please Mike tell us more. As my 2 year old daughter says, "Daddy I say PLEASE!"
Kennedy 11-14-2005, 01:07 PM Some of the latest Velocity converters from Suncoast are "work in progress" units. There are a numerous varieties of the Velocity series. The 1054 as I understand, is the current release version and is what BMDMAX is said to have. The other versions are being tested, and appear to be working good. The unit that I installed Sunday works well, but will not likely hit the streets. A variant of it certainly will, most likely lean more towards what McRat is running.
Hired Gun 11-15-2005, 08:08 AM So whats the best on the market to date then? When I order I want to have the latest but the most dependable.
fredw 11-15-2005, 08:11 AM so what diferences will a guy see now say between the 1050 and 1054, is it just more tq down low, or is their other changes as well, backshifts feel harsher, please tell
Kennedy 11-15-2005, 10:40 AM Smoop would be the best to answer. Best give him a call. Keep in mind that many of the specs on the larger number converters may be changing as we "speak"
The 1054 becomes "special" because it takes 2 cores to make one as I understand.
fredw 11-15-2005, 03:41 PM Smoop fill us in on the changes please:D

i guess i will have the 2nd one come monday along with the stage 5 :)
thanks McRat..i am now broke as hell!!

I think it will be a matter of laying out what you want the converter to do and then with the help of Suncoast and/or your dealer making a choice on what best suits your needs.
Mike L. 11-15-2005, 07:49 PM I will be installing 2 more of these converters this week. We need to find out how they work on a normal truck.

:exactly: It is a great thing being able to describe what you want the truck to do and have a company that can meet that need through creative ideas on TC design.
I was pretty happy with the original TC from Suncoast but after a few iterations the Velocity has made me a really happy camper. Give Suncoast a call when you are ready for a custom TC rather than some fin bending.... ;)
fredw 11-15-2005, 09:22 PM so how is it for towing, how are the backshifts, would like to know before trying out

Fred,
It tows well, getting the load started is a non-issue. I do however tow locked up as soon as possible so if you are looking for an evaluation on how it tows unlocked I really can't help. That was never a design criterion for me but based on how it performs before lockup I would think it would peform equally as well higher up in the gear range.
By backshifts do you mean downshifts? I can't say I have ever noticed any effect on downshifts from any converter in the Allison so I don't know what you are looking for. All of my Suncoast trannies have downshifted quite nicely. No kidney busters or burying your teeth in the dashboard here.
Better 60 foot times and it really handles a big nitrous hit well....
20 PSI boosted launches with 2WD too. :)

It's an even better thing for a company to take the lead and not except the status quo in "dead low end" triple disc converter design. Thereby creating the demand in the market that forced the "other" companies to step up their programs and ultimately deliver better parts to their customers. ;) ;)
Ultimately we the consumers all benefit. :D

You better learn more about converters before you come up with your BS about fin bending. Bending fins is how a lot of converters are tuned. I see you are spending more time here. Little dead at the garage?

Gee thanks for the hot tip on tuning a converter. Notice the ;) ?
I am well aware of what bending the fins does and how any converter manufacturer changes fin angles to optimize design.
The Garage is just fine. BTW, be careful getting back up on that high horse, you don't want to break a hip. :idiot:

ChevyDealer 12-05-2005, 11:08 AM I don't know how I missed this thread. I've had the 1054 Velocity in my Stage V since the end of October (just over a month).
You better hang on when it locks, because your going to know it! If the T/H is on it locks at 25 mph. Anything about 2/3 throttle and above breaks the rear end loose with the T/H engaged.):h

How does it work when the TC is unlocked? That is the key.
ChevyDealer 12-05-2005, 05:20 PM In what respect? As far as operation, the TC seems pretty normal otherwise. When it locks, it locks hard and aggresssive and stays locked without slip. Definitely designed to handle a lot of power. I don't think that the 1054 is necessarily the best choice for those that are running up and down the road towing. It is designed specifically for very aggressive use and big power. Joe has other convertors suited for towing.
It locks somewhere around 55-60 mph without T/H on.
05LLY2500HD 12-05-2005, 09:07 PM I wanna know more. Sounds great. I'd love to give it the go pedal and have it break loose easier than it is to do it now, even with the PPE HOt +2. How much? What "model #"
Mike L. 12-05-2005, 10:54 PM I don't think the 1054 is for most people. You better have a lot of power or a big ego to pull it. Think most people that rave about it fall into the latter. Make some phone calls and talk to knowlegable people before you buy a converter that may not fit your power level or use. Don't believe everyones report on how great something is untill you talk to someone you trust about it. Call Eric or myself for some real answers. Don't rely on salesmen.

What about when you drop the hammer on it when it's not locked. Does it tend to spin (rpm's shoot up with little increase in speed) or does it get the power to the road?
ChevyDealer 12-10-2005, 11:06 AM Sorry for the delayed reply. I don't get on the forum every day.
I really like everything about the converter except when it locks under mid to heavy throttle. It locks hard and abrupt. This is great if you are running the quarter, but not ideal if you are pulling a big load. I pulled about 18,500 lbs (trailer and cargo) the other day with it. I wanted to try the 1054 Velocity because I'm planning a little sled action for my truck next year.
It does move the truck and load easier and quicker from a standstill.
Mike is right...this converter is not for everyone. Joe now has quite a stable of different converters. Anyone who is going to buy one should tell him what you are going to do with the truck and let him make a recommendation. Do not really on what I say or anyone else that doesn't have considerable experience with his product.
