: uncommon?
lotik 11-11-2005, 08:49 PM I was just wondering if a 1/2 ton with a 6.5L is an uncommon model, or is it just me? It was the first I had ever seen. I have had it for a year now and I am completely satisfied, minus the explosion in fuel prices. I am reading the forums looking for performance suggestions, and seemed to have found some interesting results. Well, I'm rambling now.
One other thing, has anyone ever had the rubber material fail in the lower pully on the engine? I'm not sure if it dry-rotted or just ripped apart.
knkreb 11-11-2005, 09:13 PM I think you are referring to the harmonic balancer.... yes it does fail, and there are posts out there about that.
1500 not very common, but out there. Low on power may be a whole host of different things. Check for codes to begin with. Go through diagnostic check list sticky at the top of this section of the forum. It's designed for online troubleshooting questions, but gives you a starting point of things to look at to see if yo' truck is up to snuf.
Chances are, low power may be from our good friend, the EGR. It's known to clog up the works on the intake and stiffle things back a bit. A clean kitty (cat or soot trap) helps with exhaust. Properly running fuel system will help too.
Welcome aboard, and read along, it will help you to unleash the horseys that are sleeping.
lotik 11-11-2005, 09:23 PM The cat has already been gutted, and the only other mode so far is a K&N air filter. Thanks for the info.
Turbine Doc 11-11-2005, 09:38 PM If yours has rubber distress get it replaced ASAP, more than one 6.5 has led premature death when these things go, if you must drive it no hot rodding until replaced. Oh BTW welcome to the Place fellow K1500 owner, once we get all this hurricane clean up mess behind us we will be kicking off a Gulf Coast GM Diesel addiction support group, there are a few of us about
lotik 11-11-2005, 09:48 PM It was replaced as soon as I figured out what it was. :)
Turbine Doc 11-11-2005, 10:00 PM General fail mode is heat/oil work the rubber until it swells, then it starts tearing itself apart as elastomer softens; there has been a rule of tumb passed about, 100K is time to start keeping a close eye on them.
Jeff B. 11-11-2005, 11:27 PM Along with the harmonic balancer I would recommend checking all of the other accessories that run off the crank pulley mine took out the alternator bearings and the water pump looks brand new also. Just bought the truck this summer got a great deal I think the owner thought the engine was going made a hell of a noise, purrs like a kitten now

Ruh Row..... missed that memo:eek:; (actually knew I needed to get to this, just never saw a concrete schedule) - got close to 150K on mine and have never layed an eyeball on it. One more thing to add to the list.
Plan to do nothing but leaves this weekend, can look at a bunch of things on the truck the following weekend.
Wish I could join you guys for a 1500 group hug, but the drive is a bit prohibitive for me

Nope, I have the same truck you do - minus the GMC badge.

Not a K1500 group hug, a GM one, actually we have had 2 lunches trying to kick off a more formal Gulf Coast GTG one that would involve consumption of adult beverages at a venue where we won't have to worry about DUI , in more ways than one Katrina & Rita has dampened our efforts but once we get all reorganized we'll do something. I'm only 6.5er of the bunch rest of the guys that have showed up so far have DMAX.
