I haven't seen this on a thread yet. GM released a new ECM update for the 04-05 LLy's with the 1100-1400 rpm surge problem. Released on 110105. Document number is 1720529. Mine's going in next week for an update. Hope it helps.

Let us know what happens Norm!

That surge is the one problem on my LLY that I find totaly unacceptable.

I'll post with results in a week or so. As soon as it's updated I'm leaving to put about 1500 miles on her. I should have a good idea if the problem is resolved after that.

If possible ask them to show you exactly what is being "reflashed" in the PCM. We question if GM is changing other PCM settings as well. JJ :)

I'm impressed that GM is still trying ( after over a year, after a new engine package is released). If this is the fix, it may sway my decision on what will be my next truck this spring.

This is great news if it works. Mine does it bad and the dealer tried the re-flash available in July but that didn't work. If this one works it will have a major impact on my next purchase.

Just got mine reflashed...didn't do do anything at all for mine. I think that the egr pump is causing the surge.

I just had my '05 reflashed because of the surge issue. It seems much better now. I also have the Fuel Filter % life too. They also fixed a clearance problem with my side steps hitting the frame when braking .... :)

So is the general reccommendation to get the update? I saw it got worse for one guy... Mine does not really surge that badly. Only slightly if I hold the pedal at 1100 RPM. But I never drive in that RPM range anyway :) Any other issues addressed/fixed with this reflash?

My truck would surge pretty bad when towing our camper. It felt like I was hitting and releasing the throttle quickly. So far the flash seems to have taken care of the problem when not towing -- I'll report back when I hook up the camper this weekend. I wonder what else the latest flash update addressed?

SO FAR the fix is a good one! I didn't surge out of the dealership or on my long test drive! My truck would also surge pretty bad when towing my car trailer or boat. So far the flash seems to have fixed the problem (haven't towed yet)

This past weekend I pulled the 5th wheel and had no surge whatsoever. This was my first/only reflash since new (bought truck in early Jan 05). I definitely see an improvement.

is the reflash covered under the 100,000 motor coverage. since i am at 45,000 i don't really want to pay for it.

chloeourdog
11-23-2005, 07:55 PM
I would venture that you could argue that it is covered under the Federal emmissions warranty which I believe used to be at least 60K or 80K miles .... this is assuming that it wasn't covered under your 100K engine warranty (which I don't know the answer to ....)

It would probably depend on the dealership and their willingness to work with you.

JMO, but I would say YES. The Motor has a 100,000mi Warranty, and the surge is motor related.

Thanks for the good news guys. Hopefully I can get the truck into the dealer after the 1st of the month.

Prior to the flash, I was getting about 18.5ish mpg with a blend of city/highway... Over the weekend with my errands... I was getting about 15.5... this is with a VERY VERY light foot.

It has improved a little since the weekend... I am wondering if the ECM is re-learning and will slowly improve mileage again??

Well I think there has not been enough disscussion on the defect in manufacturing on the fuel systems on the lly powered trucks, they DON'T
HAVE a transfer pump, and I think gm is purposlly trying to fix a manufacturing defect with the wrong sht! reflashing will not fix the starvation problem I am experiancing with mine, I have been running the bully dog dyno dominator since new on my 05 gmc lly powered truck I have 23k miles on mine right now and this thing will fall on it's face sometimes and almost stall, its not a limp problem its in one of the fuel rails wich didn't get a big enough orfice for fuel, i have had it into dealer several times and with no avail, they do not have any idea how hard I run my truck pulling a steel 36 foot enclosed car trailer. Any help with this would be appreciated...mike

I've had both of the re-flashes done. Left the truck at the dealer for three days each time. Just picked it up today only to drive 2 blocks and have it surge worse than before. No problems when towing my 10K Lb trailer, only at idle and 1100 - 1400 rpm range. It almost feels like one of the injectors isn't delivering quite enough fuel, cuz pulling a grade, I can feel a misfire. Going back tomorrow.

I have the same problem between 1100-1500 rpm and occasionally at cruising speed on the freeway. I took my truck in for an update the the idiot service advisor didn't even seem like he knew what the hell I was talking about. Kept my truck all day and when I went to pick it up, they hadn't touched it at all as their "diesel guy" was too busy! This was after I had made an appointment three days in advance. Needless to say, I was slightly pissed and haven't returned. With the mixed results of the re-flash in this thread, I think I'm going to shine it for now. Too much of a pain in the ass to take off all the mods for a dealer visit.

To get a good baseline - how about if some of those reporting issues with the reflash list how long it's been since a filter change and whether or not they use an additive regularly to keep the injectors and fuel pressure regulation happy.

Or, those who are not happy after the reflash - can you try changing the fuel filter and double dosing with a good additive to see if it clears things up. (either stanadyne or chevron delo diesel additive are my personal favorites).

Took my truck in today for some service and asked the service advisor if they could download the latest software because I was experiencing the surge everyone is talking about and said that they would. We'll see when I pick it up tomorrow what the deal is with that.

By the way service advisor liked my mods and lift and kepted on asking questions about my lift and what not.

I just dropped mine off at the dealer this afternoon for the surge problem and a clunking steering shaft. I should have it back by Friday. I will report back on where I took it and how the truck runs soon. I am kind of hoping the dealer doesn't have a problem with my Catless exhaust system.

I got the truck back fast. So far it passed the driveway test, tomorrow morning it will get the cold test down the driveway and the parking lot test at work. Steering clunk is gone, I hope this new steering shaft is an improved version, the first one only lasted 6000 miles!

They noticed my "fingerstick" when they changed my MAF Sensor. Said they found aftermarket wiring to the MAF Sensor not sure if it was something they installed or not. It did not seem to bother them too much as the fixed everything under warranty and only mentioned finding it verbally in case there were some related problems later.

Performed recal PCM for surge per DOC#1730759

Checked checked for codes and found: P0101, and P0103
Checked MAF Sensor and found internal open circuit, replaced sensor.

I only wonder if the MAFS had anything to do with the surge problem I had?

I got the truck serviced at Ron Carter in Alvin TX.

Are any of the 06LLY's experiancing the low RPM surge? Also.. I was on this site http://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web.. How do you read these? Are they updates that the truck already has or that need to be done?

Thanks

I believe those are updates available for your vehicle, like it says. You are not tied into the maintenance database IIRC, so that page does not know what you have now.

TxChristofer,

The SB was E7700 Shaft Steering Intermediate Replace. Part #89060582 .4hrs labor. If you think you are within your warranty miles and or time I would call and make an apointment. If not I don't remeber the exact charge on the original ticket but it didn't seem to bad.

My bosses 2003 2500HD Gaser 4WD makes the same steering clunk noise.
Hopefully the new shafts are better!

The steering shaft issue is happening on all of their trucks. I have an 05 1/2 ton gasser and it has been replaced as well. I made the mistake of taking it in after it had 39K and they said tuff and charged my company for it. They also had to replace the encoder motor for the 4wd (not warrantied) and the primary driveshaft yoke coming out of the transfer case.(not warrantied). I had it in at 15K for the yoke and they greased it and now they said to bad, it was not covered under warranty. Not the least bit happy. I have a 72 chevy with 180,000 miles on it, and it has the original yoke and steering shaft. Makes me wonder what other things they are getting cheap on.

I just can't believe that they are building trucks with parts that won't even last 12 months. I had this thing in 4wd 8 times, and the encoder motor went out. That is why I hate push button 4wd.
Makes me want to drive a Ford or Dodge.
I am scared of what is going to happen to my 05 Max. I guess I am going to have all these issues as well.

Sorry for the rant.
Get the steering shaft fixed before the warranty runs out. We need to make them sorry they are sourcing cheap junk parts.

I have an 05 and they finally replaced the steering shaft after the 2nd visit to the dealer. I have not heard the clunk since either.
