sipping is when the make a bunch of little "cuts" to the tire. some tire places call it safety sipping. when its first been done, you have to look pretty hard to see it. after a few miles they open up. no tread is being removed. some places (i should say people) say thats not legal, but others say its fine? what do YOU think?

:o: I didn't read the topic completely...

I'm with Jerry on this though, I'm going to assume that it isn't legal

I guess I'd consider it as illegal.

id say if its noticible it will be illegal but if you cant tell and get away with it more power to you....... try it see if it works

I would also say it's probably considered illegal, but I doubt any tech would catch it, until someone pointed it out.

The bad thing is, once you sipe a set, you can't "unsipe" them.

I would think after one pull you would have lost a bunch of chunks of tire tread. then the tech would see the tires were altered...? I know my buddy at the tire store recommends not sipping the tires if you are on gravel/dirt roads alot. for that reason.

i have had a set sipped and pulled a ton with then. let me say it is very untrue how they fall apart. there might be a small chunk(very small) that comes off, and then there might be 2-3 maybe 4 that you can see on a tire, over all nothing. they told me that i cant run those next year. not trying to hide anything.

its not like i am altering its shape or anything. i see the rule as saying that you cant cut it to reshape the tread. its still DOT legal

Are you sipping to improve pulling? I know it helps MTs with wet traction, but don't see how it could really impact pulling ability.

i forgot to mention that. i had sipped them for road traction, havent ever tried it, so i gave it a whirl. they where done on bfg mt's and i couldnt believe the wet traction. oh so much better. i also pulled with them too. dont know if that helped or not in the clay, but i do drive to the events. i only had one person get all pissy about them at the last pull(pulled with them all year) i want to try them on some at's is all:muahaha:

I had 33" BFG MTs on my toy p/u - yea they needed some wet road traction help:eek:

My current BFG AT KOs already have "sipes" in each (or most) lugs. Not sure additional cutting is going to get you much either on the road or track, but I am certainly no expert.

(pulled with them all year)

So thats why  :joke:

I wouldn't worry about it doesn't seem it would be very noticable....

until i tell the techs next year):h

sorry dale, the only time they were used this year ('05) was the indoor pull. they were the ones on my stock rims. the hummer rimmed ones havnt been touched. i just cant tell you guys how much better they are in wet surfaces. i think they might even make them a little bit quiter too!

I dont see why siping would be a big deal in pulling. We sipe tires on our race cars to dissipate heat but with pulling there is really no need to keep or release tire heat. If tire heat is a big deal in pulling tell me and ill tell you the secrets to heat your tires.

The way they cover it around here is the rules verbiage is "no, cut, sharpened, or altered tires"....which pretty much rules out siping (damn that "altered" word).
