: Amsoil Oil Analysis - 02 Duramax 40,000 miles
cargopilot 11-09-2005, 10:14 PM Hi,
I posted these results over on BITOG looking for some opinions. Only got a couple responses so I thought I might post them here too. The truck was switched to Amsoil 15W40 at 18,468 and had an Amsoil Dual Remote Bypass filter installed at the same time. All samples on these results were with Amsoil and the remote.
TBN for this latest sample was 10.4 which is not surprising for only 4,100 miles on the oil. TBN's have always been above 10, including the sample with 17,000 miles on the oil.
Blackstone recommended dumping this oil out and starting fresh because they are concerned about the elevated lead numbers pointing to bearings. They think it may still be residual from break in, thats why they want me to try fresh oil again.
One of the posters over on BITOG surmised that the bearing wear may be from the pressure loss due to the remote bypass. It did lose about 5 PSI hot. It still runs about 68 PSI hot and 40 at idle however.
I am running a Juice/Attitude and keep it on level 3 for driving. I bump it down to level 2 when towing a 13,000 fifth wheel. (Yea, yea, I know)
Comments welcome.

There are a number of places that do it. I personally use:
www.blackstone-labs.com (http://www.blackstone-labs.com)
A quick search will probably turn up 5 or so of the most common places.
deadfurrow 11-10-2005, 01:55 AM My wear numbers at 41,135 miles using Mobil 1300 Super 15w-40 & an AC Delco pf-2232 filter for 8,076 miles were:
Aluminum: 3
Chromium: 1
Iron: 8
Copper: 3
Lead: 3
Tin: 1
TBN was 9.3 & insolubles were 0.2%.
I still haven't seen any proof that synthetic oil & a bypass filter help wear & longevity in a Duramax.
BTW, this was a Blackstone test as well.

I agree, but the synthetic and by-pass DO allow for longer change intervals and cooler engine conditions.

Why do people worry about longer change intervals???
I change my oil (Mobil 1 T&Suv w/ Baldwin filter) every 5K @ $50 each
Over 200,000 miles, that's 40 changes and $2000.00
Using the Amsoil system you might change it 10 times in 200,000 mi at a cost of $150.00 (I'm simplifying the process here...)
or $1500.
So you might save $500 in 200,000 mi. over the way I do it.
So what?
I bet my engine internally will be as clean or probably cleaner than the Amsoil system.
Silverado Man 11-10-2005, 04:15 PM I do, because I drive 1000+ miles a week and don't what to change every month. Synthetic oil has been proven to keep the engine cleaner and run cooler with less oil break down.
Keep what your doing as well, thats fine.
AZ Vic 11-11-2005, 09:34 PM Man... the FAQ's from that site are hilarious!

hd90rider 11-11-2005, 09:43 PM Well if you are using the Amsoil by-pass system, I know for sure you can go as much as 60k maybe more. I dumped it at 60k just because I couldn't believe it would go any longer and I had to leave on a 6000 mile run. Guess what??? When the analysis came back it stated "OK for continued use" . That truck now has 210k on it & is still carrying 60 lbs of oil pressure. Works for me.!!! O yeah changed the oil 3 times.
CrazyDaze 11-11-2005, 10:20 PM hd90rider...what kit do you have on your truck? The BMK 15, 16, or 17? I'm going to put one on my truck but don't know what kit to order.
TIA!
Idle_Chatter 11-12-2005, 11:10 AM Oil and filter is pretty much more preferentially driven than factually driven. Some stick strickly and firmly to short interval changes. Some deny synthetics and most don't do extended intervals. The good news is that it pretty much all works out in the wash and as long as you do change your oil and filter you engine is at little hazard. I personally run both dino and synthetic oil on a seasonal basis. I've had an Amsoil BMK-17 dual remote on my truck for 4 years and have gotten excellent filtration and wear numbers from my oil samples (at 7,500 to 8,000 mile changeouts) for over 118,000 miles. Oh, BTW, there was an historical and pretty contentious "Dual Remote Bashing" that took place over on BITOG and there is a pretty strong Anti-Dual Remote contingency over there. I'm surprised you only got one response that it was dropping your oil pressure.

I'm thinking of installing the dual bypass also - the one with two bypass filters and not the one with one full-flow and one bypass.
hd90rider 11-12-2005, 03:49 PM Forgot the # but is the one with 1 full flow and 1 bypass
GMC-2002-Dmax 11-12-2005, 05:40 PM How effective is the dual bypass on soot........my oil gets sooty fast for some reason.........

The bypass is 2 micron and filters all of the oil every 25 minutes or so of engine run time. It will take out the abrasive soot, but if you don't want black oil, your going to have to give up on diesel!;)
I have been using my local CAT dealer to run the oil analysis. Cost $13 and the print out back within 2 days. Totally satisfied.
