: Clunking while turning into my driveway...
AquaHolic 11-07-2005, 04:29 AM Hello, I have a 2004 GMC 2500HD Duramax. It has 31,500 mi on it and for about the last year it's been making a clunking noise whenever I turn into my driveway (right turn). Well, it's been to the dealership about 5 times in the past year for this problem and they have been unable to fix it. This last time however they said they had some good news and bad news.
THE GOOD NEWS: They know what the problem is. It's in the control arm, where it fits into the torsion bar. After normal wear and tear this junction loses it's tight fit and causes the clunking while turning into my driveway.
THE BAD NEWS: GMC said this is by design and there's nothing they can do to fix it!
Does this seem right? Seems like they should at least give me a new assembly that doesn't "clunk" considering it's still under warranty. Thanks!
SethMcKinney 11-07-2005, 07:48 AM I have a similar noise, but it only started after I put on SuperDiesel's centerlink -- so I blamed it on that. It only happens when I turn at slow speeds so I don't let it annoy me too much.
AquaHolic 11-07-2005, 11:24 AM In attempting to fix my "clunking" problem, the dealer replaced my steering box. To me, it now feels like I have more play in my steering, the dealer says this isn't possible but I swear it used to feel more responsive and tighter. It now feels kinda sloppy...?

I had an 04 S-10 crew cab that would make a clunk like that, it was really bad when I would back out of a parking spot and turn the wheels to go the other way. RK chevrolet troubleshot it overnight because they thought it was a safety factor and gave me a rental car free. The clunk noise was from the frame mount to the cab. Improperly torqued and loose. When the frame tweeked, the cab scooted across the body mount. Best of luck!

AquaHolic 11-07-2005, 07:15 PM Ok, but how about my steering issue after replacement of the "steering box", not even sure I know what that is, but I swear it feels a lot different than before they replaced it. Thx!

The steering box should be adjustable. Take it back and tell them you want them to adjust the box.
golfsnownut 11-12-2005, 06:43 AM My 05' with only 5100 miles on start doing that clunking on right turns only few days ago and it is getting annoyed. I am deaf but could feel it very clearly underneath me while slow turn out of driveway or slow down before turn right. I am going to send it to shop next week and see what they can come up with....
Back in 97 I had an S10 ZR2 and it was doing the same thing. A clunk on every off camber (driveway or trail) that I hit. It turned out to be that one of the bolts came out of the rear stabilizer/traction bar. Every time the body would twist, the bar would lift up and slam back down when it straightened out.
I would get underneath and see if you can find anything "obvious", if not then take it to the dealer. I agree with checking the body mounts as well, that sounds like a logical problem and would seem to correspond with the vehicle twisting in an off-camber situation.
Out!
Just Tool'n 11-18-2005, 09:48 AM I get a dull rattle at low speed, or when turning. Cant seem to figure it out if it is suspension or in the steering shaft. Truck has only 16k on it.
cameron8757 11-18-2005, 12:30 PM does every one on here who has a clunk also have nerf bars that bolt to the cab mounts could be the problem
3602daryl 11-19-2005, 10:57 PM that question about the nerf bars hit the nail on the head in my opinion.
i had a pair installed this summer and heard that "clunking" sound when turning also. removed bars tightened bolts and no sound re- installed bars clunking started again. third time I in stalled nerf bars the clunking never came back i think it has to bo with how they bolt but dont know exactly how i fixed it. other than many removal and re-installs
dmaxalliTech 11-19-2005, 11:00 PM you need to make sure the bracket that bolts to the body bolt is not hitting the frame at all. Thats most likely cause of clunk

I am dealing withthe same problem right now took 05 in with only 9 or 10k for the infamous rattle and they "replaced the int shaft" two weeks ago 15k I took it back for the same rattle and they "replaced the steering box" I asked what was wrong with box "I don't know I think it was bypassing or something" Drove truck about 2 miles on the freeway and the box was so loose I could turn the wheel from 10 o'clock to 2 o'oclcok
Took it back the third time on Thursday and is ready today,
I think they are throwing parts and REM parts to make it worse at it and I'm not happy. Gonna have a chat today.
newdslownr 01-11-2006, 05:32 PM i have an '03 with 60,000 miles and had the clunk clunk going on, took it to the dealer and they replaced the mid steering shaft..no more clunk clunk. Second one in this truck. Cost me the deductable on the extended warrenty.
towdog333 01-11-2006, 05:53 PM Hate to repeat myself but I also had the dreaded steering clunk. They replaced the interminate shaft twice, the steering gearbox and finally the lower shaft bearing until they got it right.
Wayne Dohnal 01-11-2006, 08:23 PM I had a clunk and the dealer replaced the "upper steering shaft", p/n 89060582. Is this the same shaft that everybody else is having replaced?

Probably if that's the interminate shaft
