Hey all, well I've gone and done it...I now own a 96 cummins 2 wheel drive, ext.cab truck. Traded my '92 toyota p.u. straight up for it. It runs good, but it has 260,000 on the clock. I only got to drive it a few miles before I had to go to a family function so I didnt get to get aquanted with it too much.

My main question is about the tranny. The guy I got it from said it was starting to act up. During my drive it was definiatly slipping, so I figure its going to need some tranny work. I am not too terribly familiar with dodge auto tannys. Could someone tell me what tranny I have? It has OD. In the future, I would like to do a few mods such as exhaust, turn up the fuel and tweek the boost a hair so what should I do with the tranny? Will a stock rebuild/shift kit be enough? or do I need to beef it more? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have been a GM diesel man all my life so this cummins thing is a new learning experiance for me. Thanks for the input.

You need to beef it up, the stock 47RH was not even marginal in stock form let alone modded. Try here for more info.

Thanks for the reply.
Update on my situation. The tranny before seemed to slip in all gears when shifting, it even wouldnt really shift until I let off the throttle a hair. But, if I start out in manual 1st and shift by hand...it shifts fine. Valve body maybe? TPS? Also, the fluid is dirty and foaming really bad. I think I am going to try servicing it and try squeezing a few more miles out of it.

Also, can anyone direct me in testing the lift pump?

Give Bill K. at DTT a call about the tranny. 866-504-4002.

As far as the "lift pump", the 96 has a mechanical one that should last a couple hundred thousand miles. Are you having some symtoms that lead you to believe it might be bad? The 24 valve Cummins are the ones with lift pump problems...

Ya, I finally got a fuel pressure tester and I am only getting 12 psi. Should be 25, from what Ive heard.

Got the tranny flushed twice today..very dirty...changed filter, adjusted Tv cable, etc. And got her to shift good, for now! :ro)

Need help for source for Gov springs.....are they hard to change?
