I just bought my first diesel just over a month ago. It has less than 4000 miles and my check engine light came on. Coincidentally, I had a new electrical connector for my fifth wheel placed in the bed of the truck and apparantly they hooked it up wrong. My prodigy didn't read a connection. After reading my manual, this is an emissions related light.
Could wiring the trailering wires wrong cause this?

First off, welcome to the Place.
now downt to the problem...
did you read the code? if so what was it?
did you notice anything besides the light?
have you done any mods to your truck? It will help answer questions if you will fill out your signature block with any mods, power adders etc.

All Stock :(
I'll be taking a trip back to the truck accessories shop where I had my new mirrors and my plug installed.

Most likely installing the trailer wiring didn't cause this light unless they tapped into something they shouldn't. If you have the trailer towing package and they know what they are doing there really is no way they could have tapped into something wrong. As for the prodigy not working they probaly wired the trailer plug wrong. Quite often people think the trailer plug should be wired with the brake control to the middle pin and that is not correct. It is supposed to go to the pin marked 'blue'

Thank you for the knowledge base.
Would it be possible that when the ran the wires, they could of disconnected something by accident?
It just seemed odd that I discovered the engine light right after i plugged in the trailer. I also tried plugging in next to the stock trailer hitch and that failed also. It worked before. I'll find out more when I take it in tomorrow.

When the RV dealer put in my plug and hooked up my Prodogy, it didn't work as well. However, it did not throw a code. It was a simple wiring snafu. When I called him about it he knew exactly what he did wrong.
My second trip with the 5er threw a p0299 code. That was fixed by replacing the EGR under warranty. I doubt that your problems are related.

Just to report what happened.
I returned the truck to the guys that installed the plug for the trailer. One of the strands on the wire was loose and was touching another terminal. This caused the prodigy to not work and for some reason made the "check engine" light to come on. Strange, I thought they fiddled with something with the exhaust. Everything I read stated that light comes on when something is wrong with the emissions.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
