I was wondering where the best place is to buy ring and pinions for the duramax 4wd. I talked to the parts guy at the dealer and I almost fell off the stool it was like 1300-1500 for the gears "not installed"!!
The reason I am looking to change my gears is because I am going to put the H2 take offs on and that is going to drop me down to like a 3:30'ish not very good for heavy pulling 10K+ With the 4:10s I would be back almost to 3:73's. The other option i was kicking around was if I decide everyone is nuts on there prices just use the OD lock out. It seems like it would be a good idea pulling in 4th instead of 5th?? That size tire makes about a 10mph diff on the speedo too so any ideas out there??
Thanks
Jon

Switching gears is never a cheap date. $1300 is way too much though for parts alone. You will also need fluid, bearings and seals.

I get all my gears and posi's from Drivetrains Direct www.drivetraindirect.com (http://www.drivetraindirect.com)

They put 4.10's with an Eaton Posi in my Ford 2WD for $750 installed.

They are pretty knowledgeable and helpful. And if you are local, they do installs, but their main business is mail order and prices are good.

Jon, keep the stock gears. You'll spend less money on the O/D lockout and adding a programmer that will let you recalibrate you speedo & odo while giving you the extra HP & Torque needed for towing, and probably even increase your fuel mileage. By the time you add gauges( a must for towing w/ a programmer), you might end up spending as much as a gear swap, but you will be getting a whole lot more for your money IMHO. Well I have a 03' so I have the OD lock out and I have the TST Comp with preditor to re-cal speedo so I am just going to save my money rather than spending it on gears I did find a place on line the complete front and rear with install kits was almost $600 a lot cheaper than GM but still more than I think it's worth.
