: interstate egts?
Wickedsprint 02-10-2004, 12:53 PM I am about to take a looong drive, from florida to california, I do not have an EGT guage, and stock I typically run around 80-85 onthe interstate. What do ya'lls egts look like chipped and stock for extended cruising. I am debating whether to return the truck to the 50 hp tune or back to stock before the trip. I just installed a hypertech tuner is why I ask. Thing runs like hell.
problemchild 02-10-2004, 01:07 PM With the stock air filter I can run 900 flat and level. If there is any hill at all it jumps way up. Slight incline and it hits 1150-1200. You need a pyro. You would not believe how fast egt's go up. I showed a friend how fast they climb out of a red light. I hit 1000 at the top of first gear in 2 seconds. I was at max 1350 in the middle of second gear in 4 seconds. That was running a juice on level 5 boost 3. With juice on 3/3 it will go to the top of 2nd maybe bottom of 3rd (about 4.5 seconds).
He has turned his juice OFF until he gets a probe.
What happened with the rifle? Too many rounds for you? Edited by: problemchild
Wickedsprint 02-10-2004, 01:19 PM I am still very interested in it, but I am not in california yet, thanks for the reply, I'll prolly return it to stock, or the lowest setting for the trip. I'll get intouch with you as soon as I get situated in California.
Do we have to go through an FFL since I am a florida resident?
Wickedsprint 02-10-2004, 02:57 PM On edit, I would think x amount of fuel roughly equals a given cruising speed, so if not hammering it, why would a chip even be any hotter at a given road speed? I also slapped in a K&N since I hear they will drop the EGT's a smidge. Truck is also straight piped.
MonteCarlo31 02-10-2004, 03:25 PM Your leaving me???? j/k have a good trip, how long ya gonna be there wicked???

I have always wondered this very thing. Another way to look at it is the fact that we all get better milage with a tuner or module, proving that we are not burning more fuel to maintain a fixed speed.
gsxr1216 02-10-2004, 07:58 PM mines 750-800 at 75+mph goes up on bigger inlclines but never goes over 1100 unless i really get into the pedal on level 5. FWIW i put it on level zero on the attitude on a moderate hill once just to see what it ran stock and punched it and just about hit 1300 degrees by the top of the hill, kinda shocking for a stock setting...
White Duramax 02-10-2004, 08:12 PM Mine hangs around 600 post turbo with the winter front on, same with a 100hp on or stock. Without the grill cover it is around 550-575.
Wickedsprint 02-10-2004, 08:19 PM Thanks guys a TON for the info, I'll just avoid hammering it really hard on the hills and upper speeds till I get a pyro, I just did not wanan drill a pyro before a long trip, murphys law.
DURAMAXED03 02-10-2004, 10:56 PM just out of curiousity...I mean obviously it's not good to max it on the egt's but how many seconds is it safley sustainable if any? (yes i am a newbie)
Frank Blum 02-10-2004, 11:46 PM You are not going to hurt anything running solo. Towing is where the sustained heat is. Later! Frank
Mitchagain 02-11-2004, 01:15 PM I have the Amsoil AirFilter, and run standard Juice on level 4, and factory exhaust. Just made a round tripper this weekend from Phoenix to Witchita Falls TX. Most of the trip at speed limit +5 mph (didn't wanna test my luck too much!) except for a 70 mile section west of Lovington NM where we got behind an oil-patcher that was running late (90+ mph). Never saw the EGTs above 1100 and most of the trip was 650-850. Down hills went to 350-400, naturally. I agree with Frank Blum (again!).
Run Her, she'll love it!

sprintmod1 02-11-2004, 02:16 PM Ok, I'm new to the diesel after giving up the 8.1 gasser; but what should the egt's be on the diesel running 70 and pulling 10,000 lbs? What happens eventually, melt down? And if the egt's are so important, why is there no factory guage?? Nothing in the owner's manual either.
Frank Blum 02-11-2004, 04:42 PM Hi Mitch, Have you had any problems with the new filter location? Later! Frank
Burner 02-11-2004, 05:15 PM what Frank said http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif ............... However, Hwy speeds over 105 MPH will keep the EGT's up around 1200-1400 but not much more.

Wickedsprint 02-11-2004, 07:22 PM I don't cruise over 85, puts the revs too high for my comfort zone.
