Is their anyway to get my duramax's turbo to scream like the power strokes can? I heard one coming threw a parking lot last week and it just made my mouth water how mean that power stroke sounded just ideling. I've never heard a turbo scream like that and was just currious as to what I could do to get my Duramax to sound like that.

its because the Powerstroke 6.0's have less vanes in their Variable Vane Turbo. We have a similar VVT, but it has more vanes so it doesnt scream like a 6.0.

Play a sound clip in your stereo...

The only way to increase noise is removing muffler and cat. Like DURA said, the differences are in the hard parts, so no easy solution.

I had a PSD until June of this year:eek: , when I put on a big open air filter is when the screaming started:cool2: . On the PSD and the Cummins there is room for a filter that hardly muffels the noise from the turbo:cool: . The most turbo noise comes from the intake side:blahblah: .Don't know if we can get them on a Duramax ,but they're called Tymar filters on the other two diesels:help: .

We have a cummins powered diesel fire truck 400+Hp. The trubo will scream at idle, I wish my turbo could sound like that. Oh yea and the 7" intake pipe would help, and the 6 inch exhaust too.

Watch out for the aftermarket filters.... The literally suck.... Lots of dirt!

Do a search and be prepared for some light reading!

I figure it would just be a matter of swapping out the turbo wheel on the cool side. On the 7.3, it was common practice to swap in an early 99 or a "swisher" wheel to get more sound and less turbo lag. I did it on mine, and it was not that bad of a swap. Now if someone would just make an aftermarket wheel for the Duramax.....

If I pull my turbo...i'm installing a new one...not a wheel!

Yes, be sure not to use a KN type filter. The filter I'm talking about was a big Donaldson pleated filter:cool2: .Do a search on DieselStop.com  for Tymar Filters Made a big differance in how it ran and sounded. No dusting what so ever. Wish I could get one for this truck, (guess I haven't looked ), because of warrenty.:grd:

Interesting... Call me paranoid but why would someone come here and make their first post raving about how to make their truck sound like a Ford? Need some websites?

Why for goodness sake do you want to hear it? The only reason I could talk my wife into a D/A combo was because they were sooooo quiet.
Test drove a Ford POS/PS once and she sat there shaking her head the whole time and when I asked her why, she told me she could not stand the thought of having to listen to all that engine noise all the way to Colorado every year.

open air box of some sort, a fingers boost stick and a little bit of extra fuel will make r whistle

The 03's were the noisy ones...and weren't they the ones that were grenading turbos? Ford changed the turbo the next year for a reason.

Because the Ford 6.0 sounds awsome, and he wants to get his DMAX to scream like the 6.0's. Pretty sure he mentioned that. ;)

It was changed for noise. The number of veins wasn't the cause of the failures. Their turbos are still failing.

I just like the way a turbo sounds when they scream.. just how some guys like the sound of a loud V8 that you can feel in your chest. Diffrent strokes for diffrent folks. Thanks for the advice guys

Don't mess with the DMAX sound! If you want screaming, then stick a pig and one of those Deliverence (sp) guys in the truck bed and you'll get all the screaming you want! :badidea:

Mine darn near screams like a 6.0 PowerJOKE, AND I HATE IT!!! It isn't so bad anymore that I took out the muffler, but with the 4" MBRP system, it whistled like a darn FURD! I don't knoe why you would want your truck to sound like that, mine's sort-of similar with 4" Straight pipe and I dislike that very, very much!

I had both a 2003 and a 2004 6.0 powerstroke the 2003 had less vanes on the turbo 10 versus 12. they both sound sweet with an Aftermarket exhaust. at idle you can really hear the turbo sound through the exaust at higher RPM's it sounds like a big block.

While I can't say I like it or not, my 5" Summit exhaust flat out sound scary when I really get on it, or tow heavy near redline. Almost like a banshee wail.

My old straight piped Cummins ISB was nice. Deep, class 8 sound with just enough whistle.

Buzz38, yeah, you're paranoid.

I own an 06 PSD and I'm making my 1st post here as well.

I guess it's a full blown conspiracy....

We had a 2 stroke diesel in an arial truck, no siren necc. just romp down on the go pedal listent to the music. I believe that thing had a supercharger and turbo. Killed too many brain cells to remember the details. By the way the thing didnt run bad for a big a$$ truck.

The '03's were actually quieter due to "pilot injection". The turbos were the least of the problems with the '03s.

Nope, the 2003's are the loudest, once you put on an aftermarket downpipe which won't have the expansion chamber. Sounds like a jet after that. Pull the cat and its even worse. Ford got rid of all pilot injection, only a few (correctly running) trucks still have the original flash with p.i. Some guys swap their '04 and '05 turbos out for an '03 just for the the noise. I had a 2003 that screamed until the turbo went out at 18K, then I screamed...

the "2 stroke" detroit (GM) diesels had a blower (not a supercharger) on them to asperate them (they had no way to pull in the air on thier own)
the numbers for the blowers i.e 6-71 represented that particular blower would fill six, seventy one cubic inch cylinders, and "8v92" blower was for a "V" 8 cylinder, 92 cubic inch engine. hope that helps you understand them :)

To clarify the confusion about the supercharger. There are two styles of supercharger; roots and centrifugal. A roots style supercharger is mounted on top of the motor and is commonly referred to as a blower (i.e. 6-71, 8-71, 10-71). There is also the centrifugal style supercharger which closely resembles ; what we all here at the diesel place love so much; a turbocharger except for the turbine is belt driven. Sorry to be a smart @$$
