: Insulation
Kampzite 10-29-2005, 08:18 PM Got another question for you guys...
Been monkeying around a lot with my truck today (just bored I guess), well anyway I noticed the insulation on the firewall right behind the turbo looked liked it had gotten real hot and looks like some of it is missing. Is this something to be concerned about, and if it is, does the dealer cover it under warranty???
dozerboy 10-29-2005, 09:43 PM IIRC this is somewhat common I think most rip it off. I don't know about the warranty you would think it would be covered.

I Noticed after a week of camping, I had some of the black covering on the insulation missing in a couple of places in back of and on both sides of the turbo. My first guess was the chipmunks which were plentiful around camp.
Been camping lately?

Now that you mention it, we did see a lot of chipmonks going in and out, scared a few away when I saw them, but that was a coupla months ago, I have had a service and foamed the engine bay since then and I didn't notice it then, or maybe I am getting senile and forgot about it.
txguppy 10-30-2005, 06:59 PM Yup, those pesky varmits ate away at some of mine. They also built a nest down below the air intake between the cylinder banks.

Yeah, you really got to watch out for those varments. Had a '91 G.M.C. gasser and kept smelling something funny after a weekend trip, finally opened the hood and found a pretty big nest made of moss right on top of the intake manifold, it was just getting dry enough to ignite into flames when I pulled it out. Had an old jeep burn to the ground in my driveway after a backpacking trip about 15 years ago, wonder if it was the same deal, all we could determine was the fire started in the engine compartment...got me wondering now.
ct0218 10-30-2005, 09:54 PM I don't know about what it could be in California, but on all my GM vehicles it is mice that has torn it off to make a nest. I have a lot of them in the NC mountains, even had them run up between the hood and windshield going down I40 at 70 mph. Most of my insulation is missing on 3 vehicles. I have a lot of chipmunks but have never seen one under the hood, but it is possible. Who knows what they have in those bulging cheeks!
HDchevy 11-03-2005, 03:44 PM While camping had a RAT tear mine up made nest areas all over the engine compartment, spent 45 min. on the side of the road trying to clear it out. Also made a nest inside the airbox. Made it home sprayed all the remains of leaves out with air. Couple of days later the fan took care of the rat, had to follow the flies to find it, it was in the fan shroud, $100.00 later replaced the insulation. What a MESS !!!
dh515 11-03-2005, 04:03 PM Ground squirrels are also a problem, at least in California. At my work, several vehicles were disabled when these pests chewed the wiring. I've actually seen them entering the engine compartment from underneath. Cost one gal over $2K on her Mercedes. When I start thinking about some vermin chompin' on my truck, I start getting positively rodent-cidal. Our problem was solved in the short term by judicious use of a high powered air rifle but that's another story. Rodents need to chew stuff to keep their constantly growing teeth in check. As far as the insulation goes, they like that soft stuff for their nests. They sure are a PITA..
marky 11-03-2005, 05:05 PM I had rabbits chew up some wiring under the hood. Years ago, had a squirrel tear up firewall insulation and buid a nest. Also chewed up vaccum lines.
I now use a product called "Repel" to keep varmits from chewing up stuff. Its a liquid spray that is bitter to the taste. Does not have much of a smell so you really don't get bothered by it. I picked it up at the local Farm and Ranch store.
Seems to last a long time. I usually spray it on at oil change time.
carhauler 11-03-2005, 05:35 PM If the truck is in warranty its covered if there is no sign of rodent damage , mine was like that when it was 8 months old , I believe its common, just poor quality material for the heat involved.
farmer0_1 01-20-2006, 09:43 PM looking around under the hood of our duramax on the farm here and we to our victims of the squirrels eating the insulation off the firewall behind the turbo. I thought I would replace it with the layered tin foil stuff I have seen used on street rod projects just don't know where to go to get it or what it is callled. If any does know let me in on it. thanks Doug
