Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone knows about the 4.8 vortec engine? I have a line on an 03 GMC, Extended cab, 30,000miles, very clean, with this engine and know nothing about it. The truck is for sale for a GOOD price. It came from Alaska, batt. heater, block heater and all the bells and whistles. Does anyone know about towing with this engine? (approx. 7,000lbs or less) Good / Bad.... I know this is a 6.0-8.1 board but I didn't see any place where I could post. thanks for any info. MickD

It's got 285 hp, that WAY better than any old 305 or 350 from years past...

My 02 Sierra had the 4.8L with Hypertech and exhaust. It was kinda weak on power, but the 3:42 gears and torque management had alot to do with that too. It got 21mpg highway though, and it sounded sweet with the dual exhaust, just didn't feel to strong on the getup and go, and it would not pull hard in overdrive for passing on the highway, it always had to downshift. I believe the 4.8L is a 5.3L with a shorter stroke, so any mods for a 5.3 should work on it.

I got one, bone stock with 75k on it, and runs purrfect. I have 410 gears, and mine runs just as good as my buddies 5.3, but he has 3.42's. Oh, and no piston slap, and does not use a drop of oil in 5k oil changes! I get 17.5 mpg at 70 mph.
