Now that frost is on the horizon....many folks are getting more "familiar" with their rigs. It's a great time of year to crawl around under the hood before having to shovel snow to get to the hood release button, and THEN figure out what's wrong.

As of late, it seems that Glow Plug System (http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39182) problems have been rearing their ugly heads. Not to say that all glow plugs have a built in calendar to say "Hey, lets fail in October" Chances are they failed awhile ago, and now you've noticed them.

If you are having:
° hard starting
° white smoke at start up
° rough idling (just after start up)

These are some items that may point to glow plug issues. There are many good threads and posts out there.

You may want to fend off other problems at the pass to by familiarizing yourself with other common failure points. You may want to check out the diagnostic checklist to see if there are any other areas that may cause a problem. The diagnostic checklist (http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42248) is constructed for online Q/A so we can pin point issues. However, it will go over most of the things that you may need to check on. Nothing worse that not being able to feel your fingers while working on the truck.

I am now pulling my endorsement of the instant heat glow plugs. I purchased mine from SSdiesel in November of 2004, just checked them this morning and found that 5 of them are dead as can be:eek:. Looks like I've been making a bad assumption in my glow plugs being good and something else being my starting problem:o:. I wouldn't have checked them if it hadn't been for a post I read this morning about somebody else having SSdiesel instant heats put in in January of this year and having 5 bad as wellCensored. So where do you get those Delphi's again:help:?

I just ordered a set of JK's myself. I have 3 bad ones. I have 109K on the truck and I am HOPING that mine aren't the originals or that I am not chasing broken off plugs.

Does anyone have good tips to remove these things?

I do not have the drop-the-fenderwell-phobia so I will be doing that already.

I never pull the fenderwell, only the rubber flap. #6 is a b*tch any way you look at it. #8 I fanagle from above, but you will skin a knuckle or two. If the downpipe is out both 7 and 8 are piece of cake...
