I put in new glow plugs from Kenedy Diesel today and it didnt seem to fix my problem. When i let the truck sit overnite when i go to start it i let the glow plugs warm up till the light goes off when i do this it cranks and starts but seems to miss and smoke white smoke for just a coulple of seconds then it clears out and is fine. I also notice that since i have had the truck that after it starts about 10 to 15 seconds later the glow plug light comes back on for about 3 sec just not sure what it could be. Thanks for the help

Check wires going to glow plugs to make sure current is actually making the glow plugs get hot. A loose connection could cause a glow plug to not heat propperly. Other than that, in cold weather a few seconds of smoke and missing is completely acceptable.;)

I will look at replacing the connections to the glow plugs the felt really really loose. I just had to pull very easy on them to get them off. Is their a new end that i can get from Advance or some parts house to cut and splice on the end. I found some but i think that the ends will melt off being that close to the maniford. on a good note i did replace the glow plugs in about 30 min and it was easy. First time to work on the 6.5

i have new glow plugs and glow plug relay, overnight cold starts always give a smoke screen and a good shimmy and shake for a few seconds, even stalls sometimes as soon as it starts, soon as you get it started give a little fuel its good to go! Glow plug light reappears sometimes for a few more seconds also.

Thanks all i replaced the connectors tonight and it seems a lot better i couldnt see if it somoked much it was dark but as long as it crankes i can live with a little smoke at start up and a little shake since it last less than 10 seconds.

Another thing is your 92 glow plug timer in the ECM is calibrated for 9G glow plugs which were not self regulating and heated very rapidly. The instant heat plugs nead a little more on time than a 9G. Add a manual switch and run them a couple extra seconds. If I let mine run for 12 seconds there is no white smoke on start-up(the blue smoke is another story though:eek:), it will also run alot smoother after start-up if you hold the plugs on longer before starting. The later trucks had the glow timer set for self regulating plugs.

so with the timer you heat an additional 12 seconds after the light goes off. I dont mind doing that. Where do i get the timer and how hard to install?

I just hold a manual switch to allow the glow plugs to heat for aboput 12 seconds total time on, not an additional. Normally an extra 3-4 seconds over what the factory one is set at. Peninsular diesel carries a manual timer, I just installed an extra solonoid and added a manual switch on the dash like SSdiesel's kit does.

I really like the the glow plug over ride set up you can make one yourself from parts from your local parts store, or buy one. The newer Glow plugs don't heat as hot as the old ones and they don't swell either so a bit extra glow time goes a long way to good starts. Also I found if it's smoking after start just push glow plug button for another 3-5 seconds and smooths right out and smoke is done.
