My son has a 97 chevy 1500 4x4 with T case shifter on the floor.Question is can you shift on the fly with no load? 4H to 4L and back.

4H to 4L NO WAY! 2H to 4H and back yes. There is no such thing as shift on the fly 4H to 4L in any truck. Just not possible.

To shift from 4H to 4L you have to be in Neutral and not moving.

i would say no, as far as i know you have to be stopped to go into 4low on any 4 wheel drive

but i'm sure others will chime in.

Thank you for your answers. I guess I had a senior moment, I meant 4X2 to 4X4H and back. It's tough getting old. Thanks again.

Pinta,

Generally speaking, yes you can do that.

But there are a couple of caveats. Don't attempt to do so while the rear end is spinning faster than the front end, i.e. in slippery conditions, try to anticipate the need and shift before you need it. I usually try to keep mine under 35mph or so, and let up on the gas just a little when you do it in order to leave the drive train in a mostly unloaded condition. In other words, no exceleration or significant deceleration. Should just pop in.Edited by: Zeeb

My truck likes to shift from 4H to 4L moving at a crawl, like 1-2 mph. Stopped it takes a bit longer.

You can shift from 2 to 4H anytime, but I agree with letting it coast while it transfers.

That's a good way to do it.
