1992 K2500 pickup. 454 with 188,000 miles and 4L80E with 111,000 miles.

I read some other posts about OD problems and I think I am on to something here. But where to start?

I recently had some exhaust work done to fix a leaking manifold on the dirver's side. After that work I hit the road on a 300 mile trip. Along the way I lost OD. I pulled over to check the tranny. The fluid was less than 1/2 quart low. Filing it did nothing for the OD. I drove 53 MPH for the rest of the trip.

In the morning I headed out to grouse camp and noted that I had OD. But...on the way home I lost it again.

Driving home (53 mph again) I noticed the tempo gauge was not registering. I pulled it over about half way home and found the temp sending unit was broken off at the connector. The temp sending unit is right next to one of the manifold bolts. Gotta love those exhaust techs about now! I found the part at a local dealer and installed it. Back on the road, I had OD again. I assumed it was due to the temp sending unit...but did not know why.

Next time I used the truck OD was not working again. I stopped after 45 miles to get gas. When I got back on the road OD was working again. When I finished hunting and headed home, no OD.

I also noticed that I can't trun on my radio. The power button doesn't do anything. But I can set my clock...only not using the sequence of buttons called for in the manual. I can't remember the sequence, but it was random and made no sense at all...but the time is set now. Unfortunately I have to figure it out again Sunday morning...daylight savings time! Also...my AC/heater works fine, but the fan motor sounds like it needs to be replaced. It makes a low pitch scrubbing sound when running. Why do I mention these things? I am thinking it is posible that the electrical problems are all related. But that may just be wishful thinking because I can't logically put the circuts together.

If it is, or if it is not related...where would you start looking for a ground problem or electrical problem? Are there standard places I should check first?

Thanks for any help.

Well...I thought I found the problem. If you look at this photo you will see the main harness has several frayed wires where it has been rubbing against the front drive shaft.

So the image thingy does not work. Try this link

I removed the freyed sections of four wires and replaced with the same gauge wire, same length as what was removed, soldered connections and re-taped it.

Unfortunately...this did not fix it. No OD and still no radio...LOL I really want that radio back.

I looked all over for a loose connection...a sensor or switch or anything that was electrical. This wire harness was the only thing I could find.

Anyone want to throw out a recommendation for an auto transmission shop. I'm ready to put a new tranny in if I have to, but I want a good tech to look it over first and pull some codes. I'm thinking one of the natiuonal chains...but are there any I should run away from?

Thanks,

Nate

Just back from tranny shop. Codes indicate solenoid A and B (code 81 and 82), manifold something or other(code 28) and torgue converter master control solenoid (code 83).

These codes were generated from today's driving. I pulled the ECM fuse last night and reset everything.

The tech expects to find metel shavings when he puills the pan. He thinks that is what is causing the Solenoid A and Solenoid B codes. If he finds shavings I think I'm just going to put in a new tranny. I don't want to fight more problems later on.

I have an appointment for Tuesday for them to do a real diagnostic. Anything you guys think I should look at this weekend? I'm at a loss now.

Replaced TCC Solenoid, 1-2 shift Solenoid, 3-4 shift solenoid and the switch manifold. Same codes come up and still no OD.

On the way to the transmission shop to pull the codes it would not come out of first gear for about two miles. After a stop, it shifted all the way up to third. Later that day, same thing happened. Then it happened again twice on the way home from work. That problem seems to be fixed. It had no problems shifting through the first three gears.

I also think my TC is not locking up. How can you tell for sure?

Also replaced interanl wiring harness. The tabs were broken on the old one. Posible thast the plug was not making good connectioon when I had the shifting problem. It has good connection now.

Hopefully this is the last update on this issue.

After replacing the above mentioned parts I pulled the ECM fuse to reset the computer. I test drove it and pulled codes after the test drive. Same codes as what I had before.

Took the truck to transmission shop this morning. I was ready to replace the transmission. They wanted to take one more crack at a repair. He pulled the codes...same codes I pulled. He reset the computer and took it for a test drive. Everything worked as expected. OD and lockup performed flawlessly.

I wonder if I pulled the wrong fuse when I thought I was resetting the ECM. LOL He reset the computer using his Snap-On code reader. I made him test drive it three times. I drove it for an hour after picking it up. Everything seems to be working perfectly now. <knock on wood>
