: Are non-Dmax techs technically allowed to work on our trucks?

If a dealer does not have a certified Duramax technitian, than are they really allowed to work on our trucks?? I ask because I have had so much trouble with the dealer up at school here in upstate NY (I wont say which dealer because Im not going to step on any toes) and they dont seem to know anything about my truck. They had a 2006 on the lot and I was trying to make conversation with the technitian that was working on my truck (while he was filling out paper work or something) and I said "thats a nice new '06 out there! Is it an LLY or an LBZ engine??". He looked at me crosseyed for a second and then said "...no it has the Duramax diesel engine..". It also took him 2 hours just to update my ECM software and replace a stupid fuel filter. The technitian also never listens to me when I ask him questions about the truck and he never knows what im talking about and its so frustrating that I just want to yell "DO YOU EVEN KNOW WHAT A *#%&ing GLOW PLUG IS!??!". They also arent working with me at all on my fuel pressure regulator issue. I even brought them a snapshot (on my Tech 2) of the actual rail pressure being twice as much as the commanded rail PSI because the day I was supposed to bring the truck in, the fuel presure regulator wasnt acting up. "um well uh the truck seems fine it would have to be broken when you bring it in here...we have to take measurements ourselves to make sure theyre valid". I put on my best smile, thanked him for all his great help, and left. On the way back to school, CEL came on and 2000 rpm limit kicked in. Its just so frustrating!!!

I guess the other thing im trying to ask is are there any good DURAMAX dealers in the Canton/Potsdam New York area? Id be willing to drive more than half an hour just to get to someone that knows what theyre doing...

yes I believe anybody can work on it. I personally am gm diesel performance certified but I dont go out of my way to work on them gm offers us no incentive to want to work on them. tech always gets screwed in the end. low labor times and the engines are quite complicated to diagnose. in my shop when a diesel comes in on a hook techs scatter like rats on a sinking ship. I am considered GM world class technician. passed 9 certification assesments all of which I had to drive 200 miles to ny city to take tests. it is the highest status you can get at a dealersip what did I get from my dealer NOTHING not even a congratulations. unfortunatly untill gm steps up and starts to let techs make a living no one is going to want to work on these. 100 k warr makes it even worse. sorry for my rant. when I get one in I do my best to fix it. you could ask the service writers about credentials of their techs.

It's funny that we are able to diagnose them 90% over the internet. :D

Mike, congrats on WCM, I know what thats all about, I have 6 MTC's. I woulda had the other 2 by now if I was still at the dealer, but I was fired before that. Reading your post reminds me why I dont miss working at the dealer. Self employment is a HUGE challange, but I dont miss what you go through everyday:(

"scatter like rats on a sinking ship" ):h
funny you say that, because that's what I've seen at every dealership I've ever been to as well (including the one I used to work at) It's just hilarious to hear some of these glorified oil changers scream if they get a repair order with one. Granted, there are some great technicians out there that know this engine well, and are willing to work on it. Kudos to you mike, I've got a few friends that made world class..Lots of hours involved..

Same way at my dealer, they all run. I have training and smart enough to read, so I get stuck with them...lol

World Class, dealer is pushing me to get it also. As a matter of fact I had Entertainment Systems today and tomorrow at school :help:

However like everyone says, really is no incentive to get it other than personal satisfaction.

you wont step on their toes, I will....hahaha Parkside Chevy, thats what it used to be called, might be Countryside now...they suck! Out past the diner through the fourway stop on the right, no? It used to be ok when Tom Bixler owned it...funny though, he drove a Cummins and owned a chevy dealership. He sold it though and now its really gone to hell.

Eric, you know damn well you can diagnose Dmax troubles with your eyes closed and your Tech2 sitting out in YOUR truck. Blew me away, thats for sure.....and I know you were playing with my mind on a couple of those "quizzes" you gave me....

of cors this was 3 years ago.
hats off to all of us on the diesel place that know our chit.
I get calls all the time at work with guys standing in front of a service mrg or advisor and want we to diag it over the phoen cause the dealer has noe clue.

dont ever waste your life with a dealer. get in and out get the knowlege you want and move one. In the past year and a half I have learned more and done more.
do miss all the dmax work. we get work but alot of programers and transmissions. Im hungery for injectors or a pump heads sound good to.
get tire gfo looking at 6.5s and dodges and fords.....good for owners bad for me.

Would love to get out of the dealer into my own business. Only problem is the pay level I am at, along with the bills that came with the pay. Not sure I would make enough to cover it all now...lol

I used to be a Master Certified GM tech and ASE Master Certified. I was the lead driveability tech at the local dealership for 7 years. Worked in the automotive repair field for 14 years. Got tired of the low pay and no incentives to for achiving master status. The non certified "brake changers" would flag several hours while the certified guys would have the intermitant problem cars that paid nothing under warranty. There are still some great techs out there but they are few and far between. Thanks does need to be said to those techs that do go the extra mile to try and fix your problem.
