: ATS Overhead Mount Install ?

BMDMAX

I had a tough go at it tonight. The mount does not fit the blank in my 2002 overhead console. It looks like I would have to do some modding to the console housing to get the plate to fit properly.

I saw a prior pic of a 2001 truck with the plate and it does not look like it fits as well as the 2003 trucks with the plate installed.

When I ordered my overhead I told ATS I had the 2002 model and they said no problem. Anyone else had the same issue or am I just hosing it up?

Thanks,

BMDMAX

Is your console shaped the same as mine? It is a very tight fit and took a little champagne and romantic talk to get it to loosen up a bit.

I am pretty sure that there is a different mount for 01 and 02. I have never tried interchanging them but they sure look different. I wish GM would have kept the old overhead console. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif

The 01 and 02 console is different from the 03. I told ATS I had an 02 but maybe they screwed up and sent me the wrong version.

Looking at the photos though I would say that maybe ATS did not do their homework.

See the difference? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif Oh well, I still think I can make it work but if you have an 01 or 02 don't expect it to go easy. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

BMDMAX,

I think what you've done looks good.

I didn't specifically ask ATS if the mount fit the earlier trucks since it did not apply to me. But I got the impression while talking to them that only two mounts were available, with or without the switches.

It may be that Deanna just doesn't realize that there is a difference between the '01-'02 and the '03-'04 overhead consoles. Have you called to verify whether or not there are actually two differently shaped mounts available?Edited by: Zeeb

The mount is $45.00 with or without the switches plus shipping. The extension cable is $20.00 to $30.00 depending on where you get it, so $70.00 for the two is okay, especially if it included the shipping.

When I called I told them I needed it for a 2002 truck. The website says good for 01 to 04 trucks. At the time I never thought to ask if there were different ones for the year models but I am going to call on Monday to find out.

Just another wrinkle to iron out on the mod list. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

i ran mine up the drives side piller, tucked it behind the head liner right at the windshield to the overhead consol, you will need the x-tra 3ft. cable to reach

Well I got my ATS mount and extra 3' cable today.

Yes, you do need the extra cable, BUT THEN you dont have to worry about pulling the cable through the firewall anymore for removal! Big Bonus IMO.

SO~ I have a overhead out of a 2001 Burb. Let me tell ya, it was a PITA getting that mounting plate and monitor in there!! I had to trim a tiny bit and damn near step on the mount to get it in! Then, suddenly it popped right in! PHEW!

I DID end up getting it all flush mounted, but I had to remove the back cover of the Attitude to do it. Is this normally required?

I got NO instructions at all with the mount and cable so it was "stick the peg in the hole" going for me. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

Overall, its really cool and is very custom looking, but the angle of the screen makes it much harder to see from the drivers seat. I really got used to my location in the lower center console right in easy sight. Ah well, cant have everything.. Im happy.

You guys who removed your back cover, did you screw the back cover on IN the mount? By the looks of it that is what it was designed to do. To clarify the ats mount is in between the from and rear cover of the attitude. That is how I did mine and it worked great.

Trippin
03-07-2004, 02:26 AM
I was having a hard time getting the Attitude in the mount without hurting the cable. It is a tight fit. Removing the back cover allows the cable to be moved and repositioned after the Attitude is in the mount. The cable fits nicely into the slot provided and the cover screws back on just as it came from Edge.

Ok, Thanks! But now my question is;
What would I use the two rocker switches for
if I ordered that version?

NOS, Propane......http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif

But seriously, whatever you'd like to use them for. Maybe extra lights, high idle or OD lockout if you don't have them or whatever. I don't have anything right now to hook up to them, but some of the members are just pre-wiring them down the door pillar for future use, some just leaving them without anything hooked to them.

When I found out they were the same price with or without, I thought they looked a little more symetrical with the switches rather than the plain brushed aluminum flat area.

So, do I understand this correctly....

You have to remove the back cover to install and when the install is done, put the back cover back on.

I going to order mine tomorowhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif I just want to make sure I know everything I need to do ahead of time.....it makes the job that much easier.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clap.gif

NoWake, You basically sandwich the ATS mount between the covers of the Attitude. If that makes sens.

After a long drive I am sure disappointed at the viewing angle. I think I will be doing some adjusting.

Thanks for the feedback. What are you thinking of
doing to get it angled better? Shims of some sort?

I wonder if ATS could redesign the mount to better
angle it towards the driver. Seems like they could've
"prototyped" this and resolved this issue before full production
started...

good luck,

I was thinking of a small shim on the monitor itself and maybe another small shim on the mount in the console.

Max,

I never reinstalled my backing on the Attitude, but I will now http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

But since I hadn't, I am able to move the attitude in the mount. I pulled the right side of the attitude out as far as possible without it coming out to get a better angle and it made very little, if any, difference http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif

you will need a good 30 degree or better angle adjustment and I agree that this issue could have easily been addressed by ATS and should have.

~~I agree with ZEEB, I got the two buttons just because it looks better with them :)

And btw, my mount is engraved " ATS" between the monitor and the buttons. Im not sure if I like that....

Max Power
03-07-2004, 03:27 PM
Mine is engraved ATS too. I found that without the back on the buttons didn't work right. The back holds the circuit board in place. I am 99% sure that it was designed to have the back put back on.

I did reinstall the screws to hold the board in place. It never crossed my mind to put the back, back on.... But I used to put the square peg through the round hole as a kid too http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

I can't read it without moving my head. I have the seat all the way back and reclined a bit too. I am disappointed in the viewing angle. I had it mounted between the cigarette lighter before (buckets with full console) and the viewing angle was great.

On the other hand I think it looks fantastic up there so I will stick with it. Edited by: Max Power

I built an angle bracket and temp mounted one in the overhead pocket on an 03. The angle was perfect to view from the drivers seat and it actually look pretty good. He wants a ATS, I think he may be dissapointed now.

I have had a GPS mounted in that location and now have a XM radio controller there. The GPS really sucked because of the angle. The XM is better but still not great. I'm guessing any LCD will be hard to read at that angle.

Someone should be able to machine the mounting bracket to add some angle to the mount.

Victory Red..... I have a project for you!

Any pics of the angle bracket?

Professor
03-08-2004, 01:53 PM
I took a piece of 14-16 gauge 1" steel strap and bent it into a 90 degree angle. I then used double stick trim mounting tape and stuck it to the back of the attitude. (I used and adhesion promoter) I massaged the angle a bit by hand and then mounted (again with tape) it to the top of the pocket. I positioned it about 15 degrees or so toward the driver. The plan was it being temporary until the ATS bracket came in. Surprisingly it looked good because it was mounted deep enough into the pocket so you could not see the primitive way it was mounted.

If I’m there when he comes in to get the ATS bracket, I see if I can get a picture. He may be disappointed with the ATS bracket and his is now very viewable from a natural driver’s position.

I called ATS and spoke with one of the Techs...I told him that there are owners that say they can not see the Attitude from the drivers seat. He told me he has not heard of anyone having problems seeing the Attitude. I guess what he was saying if there are problems...let them know. They might come up with a fix.

I went ahead and bought one...it looks too 'bitch' to not have.

If you can find some pics that would be cool.

If you guys have any ideas....I would suggest passing them along to the Tech dept. at ATS.

Max Power

I personally won't call ATS to complain. I can live with it. I might alter it a bit myself. Either that or I will mill one myself.

Guys, I do not mean complain....I would never suggest complaining. Recommending is more like it. If you give them input they might be able to "improve" there already great product. That is all I mean.

Sorry of the confussion.

Twisting the axis where the Attitude is mounted slightly compared to the axis of the part would help. Should not be much of a problem with CNC equipment. It might require thicker base stock and more machine time. Not sure people would pay for the increased cost. Then there is the problme of the difference in angle between the 01-02 and the 03-04 consoles.......

I'm not crazy about mounting the moniter in the overhead position on 03's and 04's. It's way too hard to see there. I'm thinking about mounting it in the bottom utility opening in the 04 without the center console. It's out of the way there and should be easy to see if mounted with a slight tilt upward.

Yeah, I tend to agree. It does look good up there, but
I think I want it to be more user-friendly (I hate that phrase) or functional than looks.

On the '03+ lower console, the top cubby-hole is almost
the same size. I wonder if ATS (or the vendor they buy them from) would make up a nice stamped sheet aluminum
mount for that location? Seems like that would be the
"best" location for function as well as looks.

That is where I had mine before. It actually friction fits there really well. No need for a mount. It looked pretty good and was at an excellent viewing angle. My only problem was that it looked a little bit to unfinished for my liking. Without a doubt it was a lot easier to see there.

No. To be honest I don't think any kind of mount there would work well. There just isn't any room on the top or bottom to play with. Have your tried a friction fit there? It actually fits and looks pretty good IMO.
