: AFE stage 2....
2MuchFun 02-06-2004, 09:12 PM I installed my intake system today.
I must say, Im not too impressed with a few of the design issues of the AFE Stage 2 system.
1. Who was in charge of R&D? Did they not fit this thing before putting it on the market? ~The intake pipe is about an inch too long! I had to damn near bend the filter housing in half to pipe it all up. I had to install the filter on the pipe in the box before hooking it up to the turbo intake because the filter wouldnt even fit in the box with it piped up. Now, the box wall is not straight but pushed inward and the rubber isolation mount is impossible to use. The end of the air filter is about 1/2" from the fender wall. -Seems like poor prototype work to me.
2. The intake pipe itself has a crummy paint job finish
3. The intake pipe is metal. I drove it for 25 miles and checked connections etc. and noticed the pipe is frickin' hot http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Do you guys think the heat absorbtion into the intake air would affect combustion quality? I know colder air is denser and motors run better when its cold ~this is very apparent in boats so I wonder....
2MuchFun 02-06-2004, 09:13 PM I will add however;
The turbo sound is sweet!
And I think responsiveness has improved, but not knock your sox off kinda change. I put this on mostly in hopes of lower EGTs a bit more..
DIESEL 5 02-06-2004, 10:24 PM I think I'm going to buy Stage 1, so I dont have to worry about the way it fits.
Camstyn 02-06-2004, 11:57 PM I wouldn't recommend the stage 1, there are MUCH nicer airboxes out there than the AFE. Check out the BD X-Intake if you're looking at the airbox/filter only and no tube. It's a way bigger airbox for one thing, bigger filter, and its polished stainless steel finish looks great.
fredw 02-07-2004, 05:06 AM set up a buddys afe the other night, it took a waping 10 minutes or so. it is my second time but it fits tight, and i do not feel that the pipe temperture will do much, due to the high volume of air that is going threw it, looks good and would recomend it, makes a truck much more responsive with a stack, but do have a bit more turbo whinehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
Mackin 02-07-2004, 09:22 AM The fit is tight no doubt ....I was able taking my time, remove and replace the element without and damage to the element .... Now I have had mine off two or three times so I have had alot of practice .... I have complained myself of the fit in the past ...
The heat is a non facter unless the air flowing thru was to sit and absorb ....
IMO the cons out way the pros untill something better comes down the pipe ....

2MuchFun 02-07-2004, 09:46 AM I went with the AFE for the Proguard 7 or whatever it is that supposed to filter better than K&N.
Im thinking I should have stuck with my tried and true K&N now though.
The wall of the box that the tube goes into is pushed back a couple inches and there's no way I can get the element in and out without disconnecting the tube http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Disapprove.gif
Anyone want to buy a 2 day old AFE Stage 2??
Mackin 02-07-2004, 10:08 AM One question 2-much ....
You only have to take the element off once twice a year maybe not like you have to remove constantly so what are you overly concerned with ... ??
Put it on and forget it ...

DIESEL 5 02-07-2004, 10:23 AM Camstyn,
You had the BD-air box before the AFE why did you switch??
How did it fit?
I think I like it http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

looks good and a lot cheaper to do it that way, i sometimes think i should of went that way, could of saved 200buckshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Dead.gif
GreenDuramax04 02-07-2004, 01:27 PM I'm not sure why everyone has trouble putting on the air filter on the AFE. If you read the directions it tells you exactly how to do it with out removing the air tube.

2MuchFun 02-07-2004, 03:51 PM Mackin,
ya, I may be overreacting a bit I guess, but It just bothers me that its just not right. There's no reason at all that it needs to be so tight, theres plenty of room. Did AFE do any prototyping and fitment testing?
Next time it comes off, I may do my own fabricating http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
parussky 02-07-2004, 05:43 PM The fitment of the AFE leaves a lot to be desired. The main tube is about 1" too long. I discussed this with AFE and they said that they were unaware of any problems.
I finally bought a 4" humphose and cut a 1.5" section out of the tube. Now it fits properly and even better yet, the hump hose allows for some movement. If you look at the OEM air intake you will notice a bellows which performs the same role.
I talked with the guys from AFE at SEMA about this problem, but they didn't seem too interested.
You might be interested to know that UNI sells a foam conical filter and overwrap which will fit. I think that I will buy one to replace the oiled gauze filter.
Here's a photo of my setup (if I can get the image to load). Oh well, guess that didn't work.

2MuchFun 02-07-2004, 08:58 PM Whats a '4" humhose' and where do I get it? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
Mackin 02-08-2004, 08:15 AM parussky
I'd be interested in looking at your setup ... If you are having trouble uploading pic email it to me I'll get it up on the screen ... If it's a picture link to a site that would be fine too ...
Mac
parussky 02-08-2004, 11:32 AM Mackin,
I'll forward the pic if you will send me your email address.

Where can I get that boot?http://dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big%20Smile.gif
parussky 02-08-2004, 05:30 PM I bought the humphose and clamps at the following website, only ran about $20 total. This solves the tight fitup problem and allows some movement between the engine and the filter box. You will need to cut about 1.5" out of the steel tube.

I switched because I wanted to swap out the OEM intake tube for a larger one. From what I'd read, the AFE Stage 2 was the best setup, and I found a great deal on a used one so I bought it. I was hoping I could use the AFE tube on the BD airbox but they are different designs and it wasn't compatible. After some consideration I decided to pull the BD out and put the AFE setup in. The BD fit great but I did have to take the metal bracket off (that the stock airbox sits on) for installation. It was a very cool looking setup I just never liked the stock air tube. Here's a pic I snapped right before I removed it..

Thanks, I just ordered http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
With shipping I was closer to $30, but at least It'll be right I guess.
YZF1R 02-09-2004, 08:06 PM This is off topic, yet on topic for me. For some reason every time I click to open this thread over the last several days, my floppy drive tries to see if there is a disk in it. Weird.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif After it does it, nothing changes, everything still works as normal.
Just a comment, back to the thread.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif

White Duramax 02-09-2004, 08:49 PM I didnt have any problems installing my AFE stg. 2. I have taken the filter off without any problems. The only problem I have is that the tube rubs on the hood insulation a little bit. Otherwise I am happy with it, especially the turbo whistle.
2MuchFun 02-09-2004, 09:20 PM I Love that turbo spool!!
Hmmm, maybe the system was designed early and there was a tiny change??
On a side note, is that a stock prefilter sock on your AFE mackin? Where can I get me one of them? I run down very dusty dirt road kinda frequently and that would make me feel just that much better.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

The same thing happens to me.... It was driving me crazy. I have no Idea was cause that. Maybe there is a virus on this tread...??..??

This is the AFE thread...What you are hearing is the computer's TURBO spooling up!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
All of my computers do it also (3 of them).

YZF1R 02-10-2004, 07:00 PM Thanks to all. And thank you Minn-Kota for the answer. Like I said, I knew it was off topic but I never had anything like that happen before. BTW, when I clicked on it tonight, it was fine. Guess someone fixed it. I see what you mean by the "a" in the path. Glad it wasn't just me. Fireman, you could have been right. I just had to put in a new cooling fan for the CPU!
Thanks again folks! Wasn't trying to hijack the thread.
Back to the AFE...............

On edit: That hump hose looks like a great idea. Edited by: YZF1R
Los Lobos 02-15-2004, 01:46 AM Could the fitting problems be related to the hood and fender design changes from 01-02 to 03-04? Maybe AFE set up for the early models and made an assumption. Just a thought. I like the hump hose idea and look.
