I replaced the front overhead console with one from a Suburban because it has Homelink. It had the rear climate control, but I removed that in anticipation of putting my Attitude there when I get the parts.

Anyway, the wires for the Homelink and maplights plugged right into my existing harness.

With my original console, the maplights would illuminate when the door was opened along with the other overhead light and lower doors. With this new console, the maplights do not light. They only light by pushing the button.

I can live with that.

But the problem is this:

When I get in the truck to leave my house, I hit the homelink and nothing happens but maybe a tiny flicker of light from the Homelink indicator. I Must first turn on (and off, it doesnt matter) one of the maplights and then the Homelink will work fine with a nice bright indicator light.

Another funny thing is:

When the center overhead light and door lights come on when the door is opened, the three Homelink buttons also illuminate in unison ~as if the wire that should be lighting the maplights is wired to the buttons for homelink ???

But if you saw my previous post, I tried to jump the wire to the maplights and it overloaded the circuit and blew a fuse after a minute or so..

Any input from a Electrically talented tech. would be MUCH appreciated. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Also, if pictures of anything would help, I can do that!

Sorta sounds like the brake controller harness included with my '01 when I tried to use it in my '03. GM may have switched the pins to prevent swaps like this. Compare the wiring harness from the Sub to the truck you have now. Same connector but different wires is my best guess.

I am going to try to get my hands on one of these so I will know more when I get it. Kinda hard to solve the problem over the internet. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

Where did you get the Sub overhead console? I'd like to have Homelink on my truck as well. I was disappointed that it wasn't available.

Ya, thats kinda odd that they just simply dont offer it on the trucks. Especially considering the price of these beasts!

I got it off Ebay. It came out of a 01' Sub. Cost me $100 though http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Its that medium grey instead of the light color of the original, but it matches the A=pillar and dash so it fits in fine.

As I mentioned, the White wire that I tried to jump was connected directly to the bulbs on my original but not on the burb. one. I tried jumping it to make it like the one I had and thats when I overloaded. I think the Homelink combined with the bulb was too much for the 10amp. fuse, but Im not gonna put in a higher amp. fuse and risk other damage. Its mostly just an annoyance at this point, but if I can figure it out I will change it.

I'll post pictures of both tomorrow...

No that wouldn't be too much for the 10 amp.

I am looking through the wiring diagrams. There are definately differences between 02 and older and the 03 and newer. I wish I had mine to know what can be done. It's kinda hard to rewire it in my head without being able to see what I am up against.

Ok, here are pictures of each console.

The dark one on the grass is the one I got that is not working properly. The other is my stock console.

Your going to have to do some rewiring to fix the problem. It is hard to do it from those pictures and even harder to explain, definately doable.

The switches that turn on the lights... It looks like the new one (grass) has three wires going into each switch. Correct? And the other has two.

Would it be possible to swap switches? My thoughts are, swap switches and wiring. (Should be able to leave the lights as is because it looks like the wires unplug?) Then wire in the homelink to the old wiring in the new console.

I think it should be wired like this:

Homelink lighting wiring
-------- --------------
Black black (close to plug not black wires at the lights)
Orange orange

White I think the white is a back lighting so you would need to run a wire for this but I am not 100% sure. (Although I am pretty sure.) You would need to find a wire that is +12v when the park lights are on. You don't need this if you don't care about the back lighting.

Let me know how this works out.Edited by: Max Power

After transplanting the wiring from the old into the new, this is how you need to hook up the homelink wires to the old lighting wiring.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/6A7_untitled2.JPG

Ok, I transplanted the entire harness from my original console to the new console. I then tapped in the homelink to that harness....

The lights are functioning just right!!WOO HOO!

But, I still have to activate one of the spotlights to 'wake up' the homelink. Then it will work fine..

I can live with this setup since I think this issue is in the homelink module.

THANKS ALOT MAX!! I Hope I can repay the favor sometime http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

what circumstances are there that you have to turn on the light before homelink? I mean after an hour drive you pull up to your house and want to open the garage and you have to press the light first? Does't really make sense.

I'd like to get this resolved. Might need you to do some testing. Do you have a Digital Multi meter?

I can get one.

It seem like after some time passes, the 'juice' drains from the homelink. I hit the button and the indicator light is very dim. As soon as I turn on one of the spotlights -and either leave it on or turn it off again- it 'recharges' the homelink and it will work fine for numerous times. I dont know how long it has to sit before it 'drains', but I can do some testing on that too..

I did by this unit used off Ebay from a 01' Burb. so it could have had issues prior to my acquisition....

I think the issue has something to do with run down protection but I am not sure. You might have to run a power wire from somewhere else.

Do you have a the guys ebay name? I really need one of those consoles. Hoping he might be able to find me one or know where to find one. I have 3 different doors that I need openers for and I hate having 3 door opener remotes in the truck. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

There are alot of the long consoles, but I wanted the little one so the ATS would fit.

Why cant Chevy/GMC just put the darn Homelink in the visor like Ford!?

I tapped into the wiring in the overhead console for my radar detector and have similar problem. I have to also turn one of the spotlights on and off to get the radar detector to come on. Although it will stay on as long as the truck is running. I guess this is not all bad, as it will turn off the detector if I forget to.

wow, thats interesting. That means Max is right about the rundown protection. SO, we gotta run a hot wire straight from the battery to get full time power. Not a big issue I guess after running the Attitude line. I'll get on it today http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Max, a 10amp. inline fuse should be right for this power line eh?

Max Power
02-11-2004, 09:53 AM
I think 1 or 2 amp would be lots. Make sure you seperate the homelink wire from the interior lights. This way you still have shutdown protection on the interior lights.

You won't have to run it straight from the battery. You could likely find something in the fuse panel or panel where you plug your brake controller in.

I am not a big fan of running anything right to the battery.

I have seen those full size consoles but I really want one like 2muchfun has. Thanks for looking though. I just like the OEM look and don't want to hack up my headliner, plus I have a the ATS attiude mount on order as well.

Ok Max, I'll just find a open spot on the fuse panel on the side of the dash and check it for rundown protection inclusion. Thanks alot again http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif
