Lately my tranny seems to have a very slight push/pull "feeling." Like you have a trailer hooked up push/pulling you, only I don't have a trailer. I only notice it in OD, and it seems to be directly related to trying to hold a steady speed, or slight decelleration. Also, it seems to lessen as temperature rises, and or I drive about 10-15 miles. I also notice that when it is acting this way, on decelleration, the RPM's will fall to idle speed (500-550) with no apperant compression braking. But when things seem "normal" I have compression braking, i.e. RPM gradually comesdown with the sped of the truck. I recently (3 weeks ago) had the IP replaced, and never noticed it until then. Any connection? I am guessing torque converter, but thought I would ask, and see if there might be anything else to chec or adjust. Thanks

Scout,
I'm not for certain but it sounds like the TC to me. However, I have learned quickly that these trucks can have symtoms that show one thing but be something totally different.
I know some of the tranny experts will chime in soon.

Sounds like an engine problem to me.

Really? Why?

FWIW, I do not get any RPM flucuation during the periods I described above. HTH

How can you say you don't have any engine fluctuation? Normally trans problems would cause RPM flares at cruise. With a diesel it is hard to tell if the engine has a surge or not. There is so much mass rotating around to pull it through its stroke it tends to smooth it out. And you did say you didn't notice until pump replacement. It could be serendipity, but the odds are normally against that. Pull the pan off and see what it looks like inside. It's not really a diagnostic procedure per say but it could give you some insight as to your trans health. The ECM controls all of the things your describing as well so that could be another avenue to pursue.

While this problem is occuring, there is no visible change in the RPM, or pitch in the engine sound, this is what I am basing it on. And yeah, I get the connection between pump replacement and the problem coming up, but what I am looking for is something a little more concrete giving the description of the problem. If it is pump related, any ideas on how to be sure? Anybody have any tried and true ways of eliminating the tranny as a suspect? Again, OD is when this crops up, and temperature/miles driven seem to lessen the effects. Anybody have similair experiences with a new pump acting like this? Thanks again.

Remember that when the trans is in high gear and converter locked it will amplify any weaknes in the fuel or ignition system. Stck transmissions will do the same, for instance; if you have a gas motor with a couple of bad spark plug wires you will not notice them as much till you shift into high. That is when the engine can be lugged down while pulling load at low rpm. That is when you will really feel the hesitaton.
