i already have a indash tv monitor in my truck and would like to add gps to it. it seems that i would have to buy a aftermarket one that includes the screen like from pioneer or alpine. does someone make a stand alone kit that will use my exsisting monitor.

Here's an idea I've been wanting to try... Go buy a used laptop computer (mount it somewhere cool), then feed the video out (if your screen has RGB inputs, it's easy... if not you'll need an adapter - or find a laptop with a video out) to your screen. You can get a usb gps unit with software for around $100 (if I remember correctly). Then you can run the laptop speaker output to your aux input of your stereo and use it for playing DVD's, mp3's etc...
Anyone done something like that?

I have actually done the Laptop thing in my truck, but didnt feed the video to a monitor. It would be very easy to do. My laptop has the output to go to an external monitor. DeLorme has a really nice GPS unit that I used on a trip from ohio, down the east coast to florida, back up through the smokies, then to Dale Hollow lake in TN... it made it very easy to find fuel stops, food stops, etc. We took our trip right after Hurricane Katrina, and was worried about not being able to find fuel. The Delorme software not only gave the fuel stops, but the phone numbers, so we called ahead to check diesel availablility, and price. Really made the trip fun. My truck has the LT package, so i made a platform that goes from the dash pocket, to the center console. It was level, and sturdy and made it easy to watch not only the moving map, but DVD's on the way!.... (at a glance)... the audio was routed through my Bose sound system through an FM modulator.

Sweet.. now all you need is an internet feed (from XM or whatnot) for realtime weather and traffic updates... :cool2:
But I'm a bit of a geek I guess....
