I have been carefully checking on CA aftermarket warranties for my truck that only has 31K miles so it still has factory warranty of 3yr/36K miles and 100K miles on Duramax. CA has new laws in effect that don't allow all companies to do biz here. I am finding I will have to pay more for a Duramax turbo diesel when it already has a 100K mile warranty from GM. A gasser that does not have 100K mile GM warranty is ~$300 or more cheaper than a Duramax. Go figure that one out. This is the same at many companies I checked into and are approved to do biz in CA. I am tempted to not get one of these if I am going to pay for a warranty on top of GM warranty. Weird.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif What have you guys done about extended warranty in CA? So far the lowest extended warranty price by far has been with Mercury Insurance. I have my auto and homeowner insurance with them which was also priced low and all claims have been handled excellent. They charge the same for gas and diesel on a 1 ton p/u truck which I still find apalling.

I am having a hard time deciding if I should get the extended warranty ore not. I am leaning towards NOT.

Me too. Isn't the Allison warranty 50K miles? My Chevy Tahoe had a 50K mile warranty on the tranny.

IIRC, the turbo diesel thing is relatively new but prominent now that repair history is accruing. I think, AAA autoclub warranty to be underwritten by the same ins company ~ would be worth getting a quote over the fone to see if you can save anything. 19most ago it was around 900 IIRC but what w/the turbo diesel thing could be a lil more.
Extended warranty in parallel w/factory warranty is not new, just standards of the industry ripoff but the standard nevertheless as if we're too dumb to notice. Factory warranty take precedence in overlap instances and theoretically the 2nd would kick in if the first is refused but me thinks they would follow the same guidelines for refusal themselves. Hope nothing breaks http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Ermm.gif

So many "extended warrenty" companys have gone broke, or just deny claims. I would go with the GMPP ...NO others. There is a Chevy dealer in Texas on this forum that will give you a good price.

My brother got completely burned by a third party warranty on his Chevy truck a few years ago. They did everything in their power to deny the claim.
I bought a 1999 chevy truck used from the original owner, it had 30,000 miles on it. The GM extended warranty was transferable to me for a fee of approx. $35.00 . I paid the fee and had the dealer fix a bunch of stuff under warranty. So based on these two experiences I bought the GM extension with my 2003.
If you sell your truck before the end of the warranty you can use it as an asset for the new owner......helps with the resale value.

I'll second what "Trippin" mentions above. I have always purchased the GM extended warranties for the maximum allowable years. These warranties are a little more expensive than other "Third Party" warranties. The selling dealer is making money on these, so the price is definetly "negotiable"; do not pay full price. I usually replace my trucks every 4 or 5 years. By having a couple years left on the extended warranties, it has allowed me to get a better price for the vehicle when sold private party. This partially offsets the cost of the extended warranty.

I bought the gmpp bumper to bumper for 3yr/75k. I figured I usually sell them by 80 so this covers me. It cost 1750.00 if I remember right.

Many responses so far seem to be from people who missed the point of my original post which is why pay for and GM extended warranty or anyone else's warranty on an engine that already has 100K mile warranty. They actually are charging you the same or more than a gasser that does not have 100K mile warranty like Duramax.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif Maybe I am the only one that seems to care about paying for a warranty on top of a factory engine warranty or maybe I am reading the fine print. I am concluding that all of these warranties work the same way and don't take the fact our Duramax warranty already covers the engine already. One guy I talked to about buying one of these agreed with me but there is nothing he can do but at least I feel someone else is noticing this. He claimed GM is still operating on a class basis that does not reflect the real cost of repairs on this type of truck. He said and S-10 ($10K)and 3500 4x4 Duramax ($35K+) are both class 4 and rate. Go figure!!!!

OK I'll answer the question. "Texas dealer" told me that there wasn't a difference in the cost of the GMPP warranty for a S10 or Silverado. Only a slight difference in the cost between 2 wheel drive vs. 4 wheel drive. I figured that the Silverado D/A could cost a lot more to repair than an S10 just in the transmission (which has only a 36,000 mile warranty on both trucks) The Duramax warranty to 100,000 miles has a deductable that you get to pay after 36,000 mi. Setting the engine warranty aside, small parts like a fuel gage sending unit cost $700. Lots of little parts not connected to the engine have high prices. Spending $ 1200.00 for 3 years/ 36000 miles of extra warranty coverage seems like a great deal. I think the Silverado DA can cost a lot more to repair than an S10. I think they are taking a big risk ( or taking responsibility ) for the possible failures of a complex piece of machinery.

Your point is a good one and partially correct. However, the GM warranty that I have is for 7 years (which is for two more years than the engine warranty). It also covers the entire truck, not just the engine.
A side note,,,,The Fleet Manager at the dealership I bought the truck from also made the same point that you did,,, he actually asked if I really wanted to purchase the warranty since the engine was covered for 5yr/100K. I still purchased the warranty because I wanted the entire truck covered for 7yrs. Makes it easier to sell the truck private party later on.
