: Best programmer for gas 5.3l
pepperidge 02-04-2004, 08:50 PM Okay I know this is not diesel related but who makes the best programmer for a 2004 5.3L gas motor.
I'd like something removable kinda like the juice I have on my Dmax. I was actually hoping to increase gas mileage on this fuel pig

Any help is appreciated

DMAX Daddy 02-04-2004, 09:00 PM Im interested in the same thing for my new Burb.
Looking at Bank exhaust if it doesnt cost me a fortune + a good programmer.
Most of the programmers claim 30 HP and the Banks exhaust claims 30HP so combining them both I should see at least a 30HP gain! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif
heartbeatcanada 02-04-2004, 09:02 PM I've been in a truck with a hypertech and wasn't bad, but have been told that the predator gas jobby is better. It lets you change more parameters(shift pints etc.) Sure nothing like a diesel mod thats for sure.
pepperidge 02-04-2004, 09:12 PM do any of the programmers claim better fuel economy?
I don't want to have to change exhaust either just maybe a k&n or similar.
Thanks,
Pepperidge

Most will not claim better MPG. Most will require higher octane fuel. In my case I picked up a 1/2 3/4 mpg, but am now buying more expensive gasoline, so it is a wash. (worth it though) I have the Predator. It is the most adjustable, but is VIN locked.
pepperidge 02-04-2004, 09:27 PM MAC,
I can really live with the gas mileage. It was purchased for safety as well as piece of mind.
Four weeks ago my Dad passed away and then 8 days later my Mom was killed in a car accident. After seeing the vehicle, I thought it unwise for my wife and 2 kids to be riding around in anything less than a truck.
I just thought I could get the mpg's up a little.
Not really looking for the Performance too much.

dogger 02-04-2004, 09:43 PM The predator is a very good one. I had it on my 02 5.3 tahoe. It does not require high octane fuel and the sotp performance was great. You can also opt to have the torque management eliminated
Mike L. 02-04-2004, 11:29 PM I have been heavily involved with gas motors up untill recently. I have played with all kinds of programmers and chips on all kinds of cars and trucks. My last toy was a '99 mustang Cobra. It took 3 years of trial and error to bring that car from 270rwh to 333rwh. (na) It cost well over 2k(my labor not included). For under 1k, i can add 120hp with nothing else done. With a little more money, i can make more.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif
As a rule, a gas motor will not see more than 10hp with a chip or program. Add headers, pull the cat, put on one of those bs cold air thingys and have a custom chip burned, and whalla! 20 stinking hp if your lucky. Gas mileage will suck, truck will be loud, it wont pass smog in CA, and best of allhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif, a Duramax on a tow program only will knock your d--k stiff and get 20 mpg or better.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

My thoughts exactly...
And quite often the net gain on the dyno is 0 HP, in fact, I've even heard of cases where they lost HP with a tuner...
DMAX Daddy 02-05-2004, 11:21 AM Thats why I mentioned that Banks Exhaust claim of 30 HP (note outside usable daily shift area) and the Computer boxes claims of 30+HP MIGHT net you a combined total of 30+ HP.
I am looking at the Predator just for a little more pop, but I wont be dong anything til I can sell my Juice/Attitude.
Now the Whipple makes me drool, but unless the Lotto fairy knocks at my door thats ot of my price range.
McRat 02-05-2004, 12:53 PM I use the LS1Edit programmer for the LS1/LS6 family group.
You need a good understanding of how the LS1 engines work though to use it.
I gained over 15rwhp on a LS6 (5.7 Corvette Z06) and 11rwhp on a LS1 (5.7 Camaro).
You will NOT make huge gains in mileage on the LS1 family group (5.3/5.7/6.0). GM did their homework on these very well.
What CAN you do? Driving techique is #1. The LS1's will get great mileage at under 2000 rpm. The 405HP version gets 28-30mpg highway in the Vette. But the same engine will get 12-15 when driven "briskly" (not racing, just playing).
Do not use a low temp therm. Do reduce exhaust and intake restriction. CAI helps. Run high tire pressure and fairly narrow tires, E Rated are best.
IMO...

cdhd2001 02-05-2004, 01:43 PM Give Wester's Garage a try.
Wester's Garage (http://westers_garage.eidnet.org/Index2.htm)
Most everyone at www.gm-trucks.com and www.pickuptruck.com like his work. I had his programming on my supercharged 6.0L. I didn't gain any mileage, but the power increase was heads & tails over the included Superchips tuning. Most people have him tune for power and mileage using 87 octane fuel. A vast majority have testified that the power was great and the mileage increased 0.5-2.0 mpg.
Do a couple of searches at the two before mentioned sites, you will have plenty to read.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif
Stove 02-05-2004, 07:10 PM Something I can post about. I had the superchips supertuner. I did not gain mileage but truck ran and shifted like it supposed to. I sold it for my Wester's tuned PCM. Londyon Wester can program your computer for what you want out of it. He asks what mods you have and what you want, mileage, power, whatever. HE will tune for 87 up 93 octane. He has lifetime warranty on the PCM, and if the dealer would happen to flash it, he will send you another. If you add mods and need the tune changed, you just have to pay to ship the pcm back to him. Forgot to mention that he always ships the PCM to you first, so there is never any down time. For a comparison between these two-there is none. I have 87 octane Wester's tune and it kills the old supertuner. I can whoop on my fathers 03 indetical truck.
Best thing is to call Wester's, there return emails do not do them justice. Very nice people to talk to.

pepperidge 02-06-2004, 11:54 AM Anyone?
How much is the core chg. for Westers?
I'd like to keep mine for warranty reasons.
Pepperidge
I wonder how much that PCM is at Parts direct.
now all I need is a GM Part#
cdhd2001 02-06-2004, 01:09 PM For my 2001 the core charge was $175. BTW, I still have Wester's tuned pcm for it in my closet. Too bad the pcm won't interchange with the dmax pcm.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Angry.gif
