Hey guys im a newbie to diesel truck and to this sight. My father just bought a 1998 chevy 3500 dually. There are several things that need to be fixed. One of the parts is the turbo, does anyone know where i can buy a used turbo in good shape?Basically my dad got screwed on this deal.He bought the truck from a long time family friend, the friend told us the only thing wrong with it was that the injector tubes were leaking. The truck had been sitting for several months. We take the truck to a local diesel mechanic and they say the turbo is bad,it has a bent valve, and i guess the fuel pump is bad.The guy basically said we were looking at 3-5 thousand to fix.So with that being said we were going to try to get the parts and do the work ourselves. The truck is in descent shape and the truck will run.We paid 4,000 for it.If there is anyone that could point us in the right direction or any tips that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Please update your signature with detailed truck information (year, model, mileage, trans type, rear end ratio, and any modifications). This can be done in the User CP in the upper left hand corner of your screen. This is the first step to getting help. Secondly, visit the 6.5TD Diagnostic Check list here: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42248 and the FAQ's here: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18282 Then post the Checklist (with your results) back into this thread. I think there may not be all those things wrong with the truck...

Why does it supposedly need a new turbo? You should check the radial and axial end play of the turbo shaft for yourself. There is a specification for maximum radial and axial play that I don't have in front of me, but if the turbo turns freely (without dragging) with the engine off it is most likely okay. If you are blowing tons of black smoke, you may just have a problem with the wastegate (vaccuum) control system, which is easier and cheaper to fix.

What codes are stored in the ECM? You can go to Autozone (or possibly other similar store) and have the codes pulled for free. Then look into the FAQ's to research what the codes mean. If this yields no results, post the codes and associated symptoms here and you will get some help.

Generally speaking, turbo problems are rare although they can wear out. How many miles are on the truck? The more likely cause of "no boost" condition is the wastegate control system. Why did the mechanic deem the injection pump needs replaced? Again, the injection pumps are generally pretty durable but the PMD (little black box) on the side of the pumps are notoriously short-lived. What are the symptoms? It may simply be time for a new one of these (installed on a remote cooler). Search for FSD cooler here.

I am very skeptical by nature and I find that a little investigation is more than worth the time that you put into it. I would go and get a second opinion at the least. DO NOT TELL THE 2ND MECHANIC OF THE 1ST MECHANIC'S DIAGNOSIS!!!!!

You can get a lot of help here (for free), but you have to be as specific as possible with regards to symptoms and conditions that exist when you experience the symptoms. Not to mention that you have to do a little "leg work" diagnosing or testing yourself.

BTW - You can buy a good running engine (complete) for the kind of money that your mechanic wants to fix turbo, pump, and a head...

Hope this helped (and be careful with your money!)

unless you get a warranty with the used turbo, you're taking a gamble. Spend the extra money on the new turbo. Sorry to hear you dad got a raw deal on the truck. But there's no sense in turning good money into bad by buying questionable parts.:blahblah: . Most junkyards have a 30 day warranty, but they aren't always that much cheaper than new/rebuilt.

4 grand for a 98 dually in decent shape, even with a possible bad injection pump and possible bad turbo may not be all that bad of a deal...

don't condemn any parts just yet, do as they say here, give the info, miles, check the play in the compressor wheel at the turbo and go from there,

Thanks for the responses guys. The truck seems to have a stuck valve or bent valve. The turbo seals are messed up and the fuel pump might be bad.We are having it taken to anther place to see what they say.Maybe and hopefully it wont be as bad as previously thought.Goldburg thanks for the info man i appreciated it.
