I might have a line on a 6.2 diesel out of a 1982 3/4 ton suburban. I believe 1982 was the first year of the 6.2. Would this be a good motor for $300 - $400? I've heard J series is best. Does that mean the IP or fuel pump? Could someone explain?

Thanks.

1982 was the first year for the 6.2L engines. I would not use the year to determine the condition of the engine. if its a good motor it is up to how it runs, how many miles, what kind and how often maintance was done to it.

J code series means HD emmissions, as in a open intake mainfold and high flow rate IP. years does not effect that as well, only GVWR. a 3/4 ton surburban should have the J code engine.

I dont think any year was "bad". only thing year can help with is "possibly guessing" the true odometer reading and the better types of 700R4 transmissons, besides body style.

Some circles say that the 82 block is the best one to get. Supposedly it has a high nickle content that won't crack as easy and is more resistant to wear. There is some other postings that discuss this.
