Got a surprise on the way.

I saw a train horn installed on a Ram dooley the other day. WOW! They had to remove the spare to have a place to in stall it. Sounded great!

Hope you have a tank and compressor. The compressor only setups leave a lot to be desired.

This is a Nathan/AirChime K3LA Loco horn... A little paint, a nice valve, and a N2 cylinder should do it. (Been researching). They won't be visible but you might hear them

I running a triple train horn setup on my KW.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Evil Smile.gif You should see the eyes on people when they hear a set of them on a semi let alone a pickup. They are also chrome plated and can be bought at www.iowa80.com (http://www.iowa80.com) for $149.99 plus shipping. They are also great people to deal with. Installation was an ease but you have to spend the extra money and get the valve to control them, a switch just don't make them sound like they should. I'm cosidering running a set on my truck after I get my air tank and compressor on for my air bags.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Yeah, Hoot! Chrome those babies up, mount 'em on the hood, gas 'em up with propane and put a barbeque piezo sparker in each one. Not only the sound of a fast freight train, but tongues of BLUE FLAME!!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

Those imitation ones work pretty well and can be installed much easier than the one I'm getting.

A friend of mine has one on his Dmax. It's real loud and has a pretty authentic note.... but you can't miss the sound of the real thing.

My install may well need to be easily removable. I may have to set it up in the bed. I'll see when I get it. That's why I got the three chime. The five chimers are gigantic. I figure I'll use my lp tank platform to mount it.

I'm unloading the Powershot system if anybody is interested.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif Been looking at the Hadley - H00964H horns or the Nathan - K3LA's for awhile myself. Did some extensive research back on the TDP and came up with a new set, compressor, electric valve, tank for about $500. and change. There was a long post over there about where everyone was mounting the tanks, horns, etc. Anyway, the $$$ was a bit much for me at the time so I had to pass. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cry.gif

I think 56 Nomad has a set of Hadley's.

I got the Nathan Horn for $330 shipped. Yea it's a lot but it's as cheap as you can get in the real horn market.

The better 3 chime fakes are $299 new.

For air right now I'm still thinking. A Viair with a tank would be awesome.

Not mine. I ran across it on the page below. Apparently, they work for Amtrack and have a little group with experience. I wonder what kind of laws each state has that may impact a horn's loudness?

You ain't kidding. It would not serve as a replacement for my stock horn. Just for fun and an attention grabber on rare occasions. Well maybe not rare, after all trains do still exist.

Oh baby...

Got my horn today....

AirChime K3LA

K3LA is used on freight locos.... 3 chimes (horns)
K5LA is the classic Amtrak... its got 5 chimes.

Not as big as I thought. I blasted it tonight....
What a beautiful note. Not like the obnoxious trucker horns. This thing plays B major (D#,F#,B).
As usual here I go on a tangential hobby......

Now it's figuring out the air supply and mounting. Out of sight.

You can buy these for the same price as the imitation ones. Just have to find the right seller. New they go for over $600.

This isn't mine but it's what I got...

I have some good options. Unloaded my propane tank so I have a platform alread to go in the bed for a nice size air tank/compressor... I'm still throwing ideas around. I go surf fishing an having air on board will be great for airing tires. Viair makes the 550C 12v air compressor... costs $300 though. Considering that. Not much room under the hood for anything. I may get rid of the platform altogether and put a pair of smaller tanks inside of the bed in front of the wheelwell.

THIS IS A 100% DUTY CYCLE COMPRESSOR WITH 2.9 CFM, 150 PSI, 30 AMP MAX DRAW.

I still have to do the mounting yet before I go over there and show him who's BOSS.

Probably under the truck. I got an awesome deal on the tank. Free. Place in Edgemoor only took my credit card # as deposit. Charged me $15 for the N2. $72 for the regulator.

$88 bucks.... forget the air compressor. At $15 a refill it'll take years to payback an air compressor setup. By that time it would have been worn out.

Neighbors.... no... I've only blasted them in the garage a couple times. And i won't blast them unless it's as a demo and i know who's around. These are dangerous, seriously. I didn't get these to pee people off... well you know. There could be one or two times where I might have to wake somebody up.

I'm mounting the valve in the passenger compartment. I'll have full cab control. N2 is nice cause a small leak isn't really dangerous. The tank will double as aux air supply. Great for the beach.

Well it's all hooked up.

Found a perfect place. Under the truck with the diaphrams sitting inside the frame rail, horns aiming at the driveshaft. One piece of steel holds it perfectly. Valve is mounted on the trans hump next to my right leg.

Pics coming.

Tell you what... with 2200lbs psi available... only using 100 psi, they sound incredible. The real valve lets me just give a "toot" without scaring anybody but pullin it full open is insane. Believe it or not my wife gets a kick out of it. I had a group of teenagers give me the "light-em-up" signal at a movie theater parking lot. Instead I wailed em. Max Power... The picture of the valve is with the seat all the way back. In the second picture only the handle shows (seat in driving position). The pictures themselves actually make it look more obvious than in real life.. i guess from the camera flash. The black hoses are really hardly noticable in everday driving. They blend in pretty well with the carpet. I could have punched holes in the floor or put the hoses under the carpet but I'm just not that concerned about it looking that great. I think it looks fine.

I also don't fuss as much as some about asthetics. I like the valve showing.

I have a 3 gallon tank, but think I will add another. I have a fitting on the tank to attach an air hose to fill tires. The tank is large enough for a long blast, cant use it too much, I live in the city. The relay is a 60 amp continuous duty marine solinoyd. Viair 550C compressor and Viar valve. That and the ones that like to change lanes with out using turn signals, or those that decied to make a right turn from the left lane.

flduramax,

Very nice... What's your opinion of the 550C compressor? That's the biggest continuous duty compressor they offer.

Also... you might want to consider a modulating valve instead of a full on/off valve. You can do that cheap and effectively without doing what I did by using a regular ball valve. Modulating makes all the difference.

I like the compressor. I have not had any problems with it. I have set to auto fill the tank with a 150 PSI pressure switch.

Last question...

How long does it take to go from 0-150 psi with that tank?

According to Viair's website, 2min 40sec. It takes less than a minute to recover from a horn blast

I have an old 12 volt OOGAH horn that I have passed from truck to truck. It is loud, and is really a surprise in this day and age. I would love to get another one for my other car, But all I can find are cheap plastic ones. Any suggestions appreciated.

Try JC Whitney, I think they still have the metal ones.

I use to have one also except it was a 6 volt tha JC Whitney sent by mistake. It would make an AAAEGAA sound rather than an OOGAH sound. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/HiHi.gif

If you ever get pulled over, let the horns loose as the officer is walking up next to your truck ...he'd probably drop his ticket book, wet his pants and run out in traffic and get hit by a car. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif Then again, maybe not ... http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Confused.gif

Hoot, you may have started something here. I was blabbering to my wife this weekend about how cool your setup was. Well, as an early suprise birthday present from her, I got a $30 Wolo "Big Boss" horn kit. Kind of cheesy, but VERY loud and distintive!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Cool.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif

Now for a silly question!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif Do both horns have to be facing the same direction and be sitting next to each other? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Embarrased.gif The only place I had time to mount them last night was under the bumper reusing the license plate bolts. As a result they are spaced about 8" apart and face in opposite directions. Kind of sounds more like a cross between a train and a cruise ship. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Geek.gif

Thanks!

P.S. Hoot, see what you started!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Hey FL if you have the time take a ride down to GAW Diesel in Miami. Besides building some sick trucks they have complete train horns in stock. Their number is 305-477-5433

I have been there. I bought all of my parts in Fort Lauderdale at Speed and Truck World. They keep everything in stock too. I hate driving down to Miami. The traffic is terrible.

Any sound clips of these awesome horns. I am still laughing about what problemchild said about scaring the drive shaft. I am still cracking up. Every time I think about that I crackup.

I want a big horn but I can't fork out 300 bones. Any suggestions for a 100-150? Good sound also.

My horn was used. New horns like it are $600+ just for the horn.

You can get some decent setups for $300 and under but not much less considering you need air.

What about this setup, it includes the horns, a compressor, solenoid, hose, mounting bracket, etc.?? I had them email me a sound clip and it sounded pretty good. Only $289.95 and it includes shipping.

Gosh ... I truly love this thread http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Approve.gif. When I have a bad day, I play Hoot's MP3 with the horn sound and imagine it on a pickup truck. I then spend the next half hour laughing http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Clown.gif. I wish I could spend the $ to do something like that, but I think dreaming is way more fun here http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif. Hoot, keep up the good work. Looks like you changed your mounting setup based on the pic you posted in the straight pipe thread.

smshiver,

No I didn't change anything. In this thread, two of us have posted pics. flduramax has different horns and they are mounted different than mine.

The nitrogen tank I'm using is still at like 600 psi. It's been in for over a month now. I'm surprised it lasts as long as it does.

Give me a link to that mp3. I'd like to here it myself. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Question.gif It must be somebody elses cause I haven't recorded mine.

You guys are costing me a fortune, but truth be known I have always wanted a set of Amtrack horns.

Scored a great deal on a perfect set of K5LA’s this weekend. The guy threw in two complete sets of diaphragms in case I would ever need them and a full set of new o-rings for the manifold.

Found the guy via E-Bay, he lives right here in Kansas City area and has gaylords full of horns, but this was his ONLY set of K5LA’s which is what I wanted.

OMG, these things sound soooo sweet and soooo loud.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Shocked.gif Will try to score me a nice 12 volt compressor at a major swap meet this weekend.

I feel like a kid on Christmas morninghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/Big Smile.gif

Here’s a clip on how they sound on a train:
