: High Temp in Allison
bcarricarte 10-07-2005, 02:02 PM Hey guys right now I only have the Edge EZ and banks monster exhaust. My tranny temp seems to be high. Under normal driving conditions(not towing anything and with EZ on level 1) my tranny temp seems to be around 180. If I put the EZ up to level 3 my tranny temp rises a little bit above 200. Also when towing around 5000 pounds my tranny temp rises a good amount above 200. Is this normal?? It just seems like these temperatures are a little hotter than they should be.
jbutch83 10-07-2005, 03:38 PM I was wondering the same question. I did alot of research on trannys when I had my Ford powerstroke, but I am knew to the Allison tranny. On the Ford, tranny temp should be anywhere from 70-100 degrees above ambient temp, is this the same for the Allison. How accurate is the stock transmission guage?
Thanks,
John

02 Durabeast 10-07-2005, 05:15 PM My stock Ally would run right at 200 and a hair above with a large load. New tranny is a hair under 200 with large load thanks to Mike L. Unloaded is around 175 or less.
Bodysurfer 10-07-2005, 05:18 PM Since I had my fuild changed, my Ally runs at the 200F all the time. No matter time of day and type of driving (city or highway).
And that is WITHOUT a load in bed or pulling a trailer.
Empty truck and running at 200F..........what the H3LL?

mikeI thought our trucks already had a cooler?...is yours better?just wondering...my temps are low until I get stuck in traffic then temps have risen to about 200?
Gruber 10-07-2005, 09:36 PM Mike L. has many satisfied customers. His cooler dropped my tranny temps considerably. It's a bolt on and the stock fittings slip right in to his cooler. Towing with the camper on at 16,900 lbs I never got over 188 in the desert at 95 degress running at 70mph...search for the Kudos Mike L thread
:cool2: is what I'm talking about
03LB-7dmax 10-07-2005, 09:43 PM Another way to bring it down is mount a electric fan in front of the tranny cooler,my friend did on his duramax and pulling a load 6,000 ibs in 90 degree weather it would stay at 150 mark. So i bought one cuz i had the same problem about 200 on the tranny temp gauge. Now it stays right at 150 or a little cooler.I bought a 14" fan from autozone for $60.
Diesel Dragon 10-07-2005, 10:42 PM If you keep the tranny in Tow/haul in stop and go driving it will help keep tranny temps down, but you have to do it before it gets too hot.
Most heat is from torque converter slippage, if it's locked theres no slipping and less heat generated.

Got any pics of this fan mounted? Type and part # for the fan?
mightyvh 10-08-2005, 05:03 PM There have been a number of post on the results of Mike's cooler. For me it made a solid 15+ degree difference towing and around town as compared to the stock cooler. At the time I installed Mike's cooler I also changed over to a deep pan and Mobil 1 synthetic. Now the pan and fluid I think might change the rate at which the temp fluctuates but not the overall temp. As Michael Nelson said around town on hot days I would get to 200. Same or a little more for towing my trailer on hyway grades. The hotest my tranny has gotten with the new cooler is maybe 185 and usually lower then that (that was going up Hyw 80 w/ my trailer over the Sierra w/ 90 + outside temp).......I'm very happy with it's preformance plus no modifications to install.....Bill
mike...you can make that check out to mightyvh thats M-I-G-H-T......just kidding ...good product!

Where can I find out more about this cooler?? Thanks
Unit453 10-21-2005, 05:46 PM I have never seen the tranny hit 200 degrees. Even in southern Louisiana weather. Driving to work in the morning, its a hair over 100. Maybe 105? Towing is never any higher than 130. Ever. I dont see why everyone is having all these problems with a hot tranny.

Always hitting 190-200F on my tranny and I am not even towing or have a load in the bed. Seemed to start ever since dealer changed my fluid & spin-on filter. SO, I changed the spin-on again just incase it was a bad filter................THAT DIDNT WORK. Also, shifts bad.....hard up and sometimes down.
:wtf:
Capt. Nemo 10-21-2005, 06:40 PM Mike's cooler works as advertised. Very easy to install and lowered my transmission temps by 15-20 degrees. GM should be required to install them at the assemby line!
:cool2:
Gitchuwun!
Unit453 10-21-2005, 07:47 PM Mine has shifted hard at times too but its Hypertech related. I cant believe you guys and how hot those tranny's are runnin.

Check the fluid level when hot. There were some posts earlier this year about the tranny running hot and shifting funny if it was too full. Mine was shifting funny on the down shift when going around corners - backed the fluid off to about the 3/4 mark and it shifts great now.

Looked at it already. I show of said that also. Level is fine.
bcarricarte 11-01-2005, 05:23 PM Thats it I'm sick of my temp going around 200 just driving around without towing. I'm gonna take my truck into the dealer and argue this one out and see what happens. I'll let you know how it goes.
