Im looking at getting a d-max and Im wondering what where the differances between the 2004 and 2004.5 engines. Im new to the diesel world and wondering a few things.

try a search there should be some good info on that. The biggest change from 04(LB7) and 04.5(LLY) is the internal/external injectors. The LB7 is good choice because of the unlimited amount of mods you can do to it. The LLY has its benefits because of the external injectors that can be replaced alot easier than the LB7 internal injectors.

The '01-04 LB7's now have a 7 year 200,000 mile injector warranty on them. The LLY also comes w/ an EGR and cat and have more emissions stuff. Some LLY's have had overheating issues, while others seem to be just fine.

They both have their positive and negative attributes but either way you choose you can't go wrong. try searching for more specific info in both the LB7 & LLY forums.

I have an 02 and love driving it. Plenty of power. I do know others that have the LLY (2004.5) and mileage is not nearly as good. I am now getting close to 20 mpg and that is using some Pane. Before that I was close to 17 - 18.

either way it's a good overall motor. The LLY has a different turbo setup as well. I run an LB7 and have been overall pretty pleased with it.

I have the 06 LLY but was looking long and hard at the new LBZ, in the end I had to pull the trigger.
